Phoenix Divine In Win Over Angels

(CHAMBERSBURG, Pa.) – Wilson Weekend opened up with a bang as the Phoenix field hockey team posted a season-high seven goals in downing Meredith on a rainy Saturday afternoon. The Blue and White didn't waste any time in sparking the onslaught as they scored just 3:50 into the contest with the Avenging Angels.

The Basics

Score: Wilson 7, Meredith 2

Venue: Wilson Hockey Field

Records: Wilson 8-4, Meredith 1-10

How It Happened
  • Elizabeth Landon (So., West Grove, Pa. / Avon Grove) and Paige Ney (So., Biglerville, Pa. / Biglerville) were instrumental in setting the tone as they connected to light up the scoreboard first for the Phoenix. Ney provided the assist on a cross to Landon who was set up nicely in front of the goal to punch it home. Landon wasn't finished as she went on to score just over four minutes later, this time with Hannah Aker (Jr., Yardley, Pa. / Pennsbury) serving it up the middle just inside the top of the circle.
  • Wilson continued to dominate the first quarter and added another goal late in the from with Kate Seymour (FY, Churchton, Md. / Southern) doing the honors on an assist from Lenoree Hoke (FY, Shippensburg, Pa. / Shippensburg).
  • The Avenging Angels opened up the second half on the offensive and cut the deficit down to two as Jordan Brooks scored on an assist from Megan Ingenito. The momentum didn't last long as Mia Brunet (So., Waynesboro, Pa. / Waynesboro) was able to get it back on a second assist from Hoke four minutes later. It appeared that Wilson would enter halftime with a three-goal lead, but Brea Kelso (Jr., Shippensburg, Pa. / Shippensburg) was able to push in another goal on Ney's second helper of the day.
  • In the second half, Meredith was able to find another goal as Sierra Grande scored 5:50 into the third. Allyson Shindler (Sr., Manchester, Pa. / Northeastern) was able make a terrific save moments before, but Grande controlled the rebound and made the score 5-2.
  • Ultimately it was the Phoenix who had the last word as they put two goals in during the final moments. After a pair of assists, Hoke found the back of the net herself with 3:45 to go in the game. Just under a minute later Kelso found Sadie Fike open in front of the goal and sent in a pass. While Fike wasn't able to get a touch on the ball, it still found its way into the goal for the 7-2 lead.
Inside The Numbers
  • Wilson's attack was able to inundate the Avenging Angels defense with 33 shots, 30 more than its opponents on the opposite end. Twenty-four of those were on goal for the Phoenix.
  • As a result of the strong offense, corners heavily favored the Blue and White as well by a 10-4 advantage.
  • Kelso's two goals give her four for the year as she also had a multiple goal game in a 4-2 win against Washington & Jefferson.
  • Landon's pair were her first of the season. She previously had a two-goal game last season in a win at Bryn Athyn.
  • Brunet and Hoke both scored the first goals of their career. For Hoke, the assists were her first points of her career.
  • The seven goals are the highest in a single game for the Phoenix since scoring 10 at Bryn Athyn in the regular season finale in 2022.
