(CHAMBERSBURG, Pa.) – A first quarter blitz by the Wilson offense helped the Phoenix breeze by visiting Southern Virginia in non-conference action on Wednesday afternoon. It resulted in three goals by the Blue and White in the first 8:06 of the game as they kept control throughout for a second consecutive shutout.
The Basics
Score: Wilson 4, Southern Virginia 0
Venue: Wilson Hockey Field
Records: Wilson 7-4, Southern Virginia 0-9
How It Happened
- Right off the bat Wilson was able to get a leg up on the Knights as the first goal came just 3:07 into the game. Kate Seymour (FY, Churchton, Md. / Southern) took advantage of a loose ball the Knights failed to corral and was able to jet towards the goal from the right to the far post for the score.
- Just two minutes later, Paige Ney (So., Biglerville, Pa. / Biglerville) made it 2-0 in favor of the Phoenix. Angela Keomahavong (FY, San Jose, Calif. / Cupertino) was able to bring the ball up close from the right before dishing off to Ney on the left post who was then able to slam it home uncontested. Ney wasn't finished as she scored a second time at the 8:06 mark with Elizabeth Landon (So., West Grove, Pa. / Avon Grove) providing the assist.
- The score remained dormant through halftime before Wilson put on the offensive pressure once again to start the third quarter. Seymour fired off a couple of shots, one saved and one that went over the crossbar, before eventually scoring her second of the day. Keomahavong got involved once again giving her a second helper in the game.
- Southern Virginia was largely on the defensive for most of the game, but did see one opportunity on the attack late in the second quarter. A penalty corner was awarded to the Knights which led to a shot by Jocelyn Moreno, but the attempt was blocked by the Phoenix back line. It was the visitors' only shot of the game.
Inside The Numbers
- Ney's goals give her nine for the season and puts her back in the lead for most in the conference. It's the second time this season she's scored multiple goals after doing so against Allegheny a month ago.
- Seymour isn't too far behind as her pair give her seven on the year. That number ranks third in the conference. It's also Seymour's second multiple goal game of the season with the other coming at Eastern Mennonite.
- Ney and Seymour are third and fourth in the United East with 18 and 17 points, respectively.
- Keomahavong's two points via assists give her three on the season after also tallying a helper in the win against Allegheny.
- Wilson outshot Southern Virginia 23-1 with 17 shots on goal. Nine different players took swipes at the goal with Ney, Seymour, and Kaley Barnhart (Sr., Greencastle, Pa. / Greencastle) all registering four to lead the team.
