Women's Hoops Pulls Away From Highlanders

(CHAMBERSBURG, Pa.) – Adrianna Stricek (Fy., Harrisburg, Pa. / Trinity) recorded her fifth double-double of the season as Wilson downed Cairn on Thursday evening. The defeat of the Highlanders is the fifth-straight on the season for the Phoenix.

The Basics

Score: Wilson 61, Cairn 45

Venue: Gannett Field House

Records: Wilson 7-4, 4-1; Cairn 2-9, 0-5

How It Happened
  • The first quarter was tightly contested as both teams seemingly went basket for basket. Stricek was the catalyst for the Phoenix offense as she scored the first eight points for Wilson. A couple of jumpers by Madison Ross (Sr., New Oxford, Pa. / New Oxford) eventually put Wilson up five as it looked to create some separation, but the Highlanders cut the deficit down to 14-12 at the end of the period.
  • Wilson led the rest of the way, but Cairn stayed close until the third quarter when the Phoenix were finally able to create some space. Samira Murphy (Sr., Virginia Beach, Va. / Great Bridge Christian) sparked the offense with the first six points of the frame. That put Wilson up 33-22 just 1:33 into the half, but it was the first time Wilson led by more than two possessions. Murphy wasn't done as she reached double-figures in the third alone with four more points including a layup in the final seconds that put Wilson up 47-35 heading to the fourth.
  • The Phoenix lead stayed in double-digits for the duration of the fourth. Late in the game, back-to-back buckets by Murphy put Wilson up 61-43, its largest lead of the game, before a couple of Highlander free throws set up the final score.
Inside The Numbers
  • Stricek finished with co-game high honors with 18 points. She was 8-of-13 from the field and pulled down 13 rebounds for her fifth double-double.
  • Murphy added 14 points as the only other Phoenix in double-figures. She added three rebounds, two assists, and two steals.
  • Wilson controlled the paint all night and doubled-up the Highlanders by a count of 36-18 inside.
  • Depth also played a role in the game as Wilson outscored Cairn 19-0 in that department.
  • Turnovers were pivotal with the Phoenix turning 26 Cairn miscues into 22 points compared to 11 points on 22 by Wilson.
  • Wilson did well distributing the ball and chalked up 21 assists, the second time the Phoenix have recorded 20 this year. The season high is 23 which they tallied in an 84-56 win against Valley Forge. Ross led the way with six. Jewels Torres (Fy., York, Pa. / West York) dished out five.
Up Next
The Phoenix will look to make it six-straight when they head to La Plume on Saturday for a date with Keystone. Tip-off with the Giants is set for 1 p.m.
