Phoenix Finish Strong To Top Giants

(LA PLUME, Pa.) – Darryl Garib (Sr., Dallas, Texas / Forest Park) scored a season-high 28 points and was three assists shy of a triple-double as Wilson overcame an eight-point halftime deficit to defeat Keystone Wednesday evening. Three other Phoenix scored in double figures with Antonio Bussey (Sr., Aiken, S.C. / Aiken / Claflin) leading that group with a double-double of his own.

The Basics

Score: Wilson 77, Keystone 72

Venue: Gambal Athletic Center

Records: Wilson 7-5, 1-0 CSAC; Keystone 4-8, 0-1 CSAC

How It Happened
  • It was Keystone who had the hot hand early as the Giants shot 53.8%, 14-of-26, in the opening half. They showed it from the start and overcame a pregame technical to make consecutive 3-pointers to take a 6-1 lead. The Giants continued to lead for the rest of the first half.
  • Keystone looked to go into the locker room up 10 after a 3-pointer by Daivel Jackson made the score 40-30, but Garib closed out the half with a jumper on a dish from Jordan Miles (Sr., Waldorf, Md. / Westlake) to put the score at 40-32 at the break.
  • Wilson was able to build upon the last bucket and make some adjustments that allowed the Phoenix to start the second half fast. In the first five minutes Wilson was able to cut the deficit to one as a triple by Kennedy Birdwell (Sr., Temple Hills, Md. / Fairmont Heights), tip-in by Bussey, and a layup by Garib made the score 48-47.
  • Keystone was able to hold onto the lead, but consecutive treys from Garib and Rick Godwin Jr. (Sr., Largo, Md. / Largo / Southern Maryland) eventually tied the game at 58-all with 10:29 to go. Two minutes later a Bussey layup put Wilson up 62-61.
  • A layup by the Giants' Marcus Bauman tied the game at 67-67 with 4:19 to go. It was the last time the game was tied and Keystone's only field goal in the last 11:30 of in-game action.
  • On the opposite end, Bussey answered with a free throw to put Wilson on top for good. He closed the game in style by scoring seven of the last 10 Phoenix points to secure the win.
Inside The Numbers
  • Garib scored his new career-high 28 points by going 10-of-19 from the field with a 3-pointer. He pulled down 10 rebounds for his sixth double-double of the season. His seven assists set a new career mark. Defensively he was swift with five steals.
  • Bussey finished his night with quite a full stat line as well. He finished with a season-best 19 points, 11 rebounds, and five blocks. He was nearly unstoppable offensively as he was 7-of-8 from the field.
  • Gary Robertson (Jr., Washington D.C. / Potomac) and Godwin made it a quartet of Phoenix in double figures with 12 and 10 points, respectively. Robertson was also responsible for a handful of other points as he dished out six assists.
  • Wilson controlled the glass by a margin of 40-31 with 18 rebounds on the offensive end. That translated into 15 second chance points.
  • Wilson moves to 4-1 over this six-game road stretch.

For The Giants
  • Keystone had its share of stars as well. Jack Anderson led the way with a game-high 30 points on 10-of-20 from the field and 4-of-8 behind the arc. Pete Laidley added 17 points and blocked four shots while Daivel Jackson added 11.
Up Next
Wilson will conclude its six-game road stretch when it travels to Langhorne to take on Cairn this Saturday. Tip-off with the Highlanders is set for 3 p.m.
