(ALLENTOWN, Pa.) – In its first game in 25 days, the Wilson women's basketball team picked up where it left off in a victory over Cedar Crest on Tuesday evening. The Phoenix used a powerful third quarter to pull away from the Falcons and record their fourth consecutive win.
THE BASICS
Score: Wilson 61, Cedar Crest 44
Venue: Lees Hall
Records: Wilson 6-4, 3-1 CSAC; Cedar Crest 0-6, 0-4 CSAC
How It Happened
- The game was back-and-forth for most of the first half until Wilson started to pull away in the middle of the second quarter. After a 3-pointer gave the Falcons a 19-15 with 5:14 to go in the half, the Phoenix shut out the hosts for the rest of the frame while going on a 10-0 run. Samira Murphy (Sr., Virginia Beach, Va. / Great Bridge Christian) sparked the run with a layup following an offensive rebound before a steal and layup by Jewels Torres (Fy., York, Pa. / West York) tied the game at 19-all. Murphy added another pair of buckets sandwiched around a Laela Robinson (Fy., Lancaster, Pa. / Conestoga Valley) layup to put Wilson in the lead for good as the Phoenix went into halftime up 25-19.
- While Cedar Crest opened up the third quarter with the first two buckets to crawl back within two points of the Phoenix, Wilson reeled off the next 18 points to take command of the game. Murphy got the proverbial ball rolling once again with a layup on a dish from Robinson before Adrianna Stricek (Fy., Harrisburg, Pa. / Trinity) swiped a Cedar Crest possession and finished off with a layup of her own. Robinson capped the 18-0 run with a steal and a layup of her own to make the score 43-23 with 2:30 left in the frame.
- Later in the fourth quarter, Naomi Hanton (Sr., Bristow, Va. / Patriot) added another lay-in to make the score 61-39 with 1:58 left in regulation. The 22-point lead was the largest for the Phoenix in the game.
Inside The Numbers
- Murphy paced the Phoenix and led all scorers with 18 points on the evening. She was 9-of-13 from the field for a field goal percentage of 69.2%.
- Stricek joined her in double figures with 14 points. She tallied 10 rebounds to give her a fourth-double-double on the year as well.
- Turnovers doomed the Falcons as they were charged with 31 miscues with Wilson responsible for 11 steals on the night. Those turnovers translated into 30 points on the offensive end for the Phoenix.
- Almost all of the Phoenix offense came from inside as they nearly equaled Cedar Crest's game total from the paint alone with 42 points. Wilson only took two 3-point attempts in the entire game.
- It's the first four-game win streak for the Phoenix since the 2018-19 season when Wilson defeated Penn State Mont Alto, Bryn Athyn, Trinity (DC), and Notre Dame of Maryland in February.
