The Basics
Score: Wilson 67, Keystone 52
Venue: Gannett Field House
Records: Wilson 11-8, 5-3 CSAC; Keystone 8-11, 4-4 CSAC
How It Happened
- Contrary to their other three games in their current win streak, it was a slow start for the Phoenix as the Giants jumped out to a 12-2 lead just 2:58 into the game. Outside shooting helped Wilson come back to make it a two point game after a pair of 3-pointers by Jordan Miles (Sr., Waldorf, Md. / Westlake) made the score 14-12 two minutes later.
- Keystone eventually extended its lead to eight at 24-16 following a Marcus Bauman layup before the Phoenix offense got hot. Rick Godwin Jr. (Sr., Largo, Md. / Largo / Southern Maryland) answered on the opposite end with another triple and eventually stole the ball and coasted in for a layup to make it a one-possession game once again. He wasn't done as another trey eventually gave Wilson a 29-26 lead with 3:51 left in the first half. The Giants closed back within one after a layup, but Wilson ended the half with the final six points to close the frame on a 19-4 run.
- At the start of the second half, Darryl Garib (Sr., Dallas, Texas / Forest Park) couldn't be stopped at the start as he scored the first seven points for the Phoenix. That gave Wilson a 42-30 lead 3:02 into the period, and the Phoenix led by double-digits the rest of the way. Two more Garib layups gave Wilson its largest lead of the game at 19 points later in the half.
Inside The Numbers
- Garib finished with a game-high 22 points and was 9-for-15 from the field. In the second half alone he score 19 and was 8-for-10.
- Godwin joined him with 20 points after he went 7-for-15 with four 3-pointers. While Garib did most of his offensive work in the second half, Godwin sparked the offense in the first half with 15 points and three of his triples. He was also strong on the glass with eight rebounds.
- Antonio Bussey (Sr., Aiken, S.C. / Aiken / Claflin) was a work horse once again underneath as he recorded his fifth double-double with 13 points and 13 rebounds.
- Wilson blocked a total of six Keystone shots, two shy of the season high the Phoenix recorded against the Giants earlier this month. Ibraheem Bundu (So., Largo, Md. / CCBC Dundalk) provided half of them today while Garib rejected a pair.
- Wilson outscored Keystone in the paint by a 34-26 margin. Points off turnovers also helped the Phoenix as they turned 18 Giants miscues into 20 points. Meanwhile Keystone mustered 13 points from 15 Wilson turnovers.
- The Giants were led by Javen Flowers-Smith with 17 points. He was 7-of-19 from the field with five steals. Pete Laidley also recorded a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
- The win is the fifth consecutive against the Giants in the all-time series. Altogether Wilson is 8-1 against Keystone.
