Wilson Downs Rosemont With a Record-Setting Night

(BRYN MAWR, Pa.) – A red-hot Wilson had a record-setting night as it hit 75% of its shots in defeating Rosemont 86-71 in CSAC action on Wednesday evening. The Phoenix went 36-for-48 overall in the game in avenging a loss to the Ravens back on January 11.

A quartet of Phoenix scored in double-figures led by Rick Godwin Jr. (Sr., Largo, Md. / Largo / Southern Maryland) with 25 points with five 3-pointers.

The .750 field goal percentage is the second-best by a team in Division III this season by just .003 as Wisconsin-Stout made 75.3% of its shots in a 147-126 win against Greenville back on November 18. It's the third best mark in all of the NCAA regardless of division.

The mark is a new program record as well, smashing the previous best of .603 set two weeks ago in a 97-44 win against Valley Forge. Before that, one would have to go back to the 2018-19 season when Wilson hit 59.7% (37-of-62) against Cabrini in December of that season.

The Basics

Score: Wilson 86, Rosemont 71

Venue: Alumnae Hall

Records: Wilson 12-8, 6-3 CSAC; Rosemont 8-12, 6-3 CSAC
  • The first half featured plenty of action between the two teams fighting for second place in the CSAC standings. A 3-pointer by the Ravens tied the game up at 9-all before Wilson went on a 13-5 run to create some separation with an Antonio Bussey (Sr., Aiken, S.C. / Aiken / Claflin) slam to give Phoenix control. Another Bussey dunk put Wilson up six late in the half before Rosemont hit another triple just before the buzzer to put the score at 36-33 in favor of the Phoenix at the break.
  • Despite the hot hands by the Phoenix, the Ravens still managed to pour in the buckets themselves and use a 14-5 run to take a 47-41 lead at the start of the second half. Godwin answered with one of his five treys and eventually gave the lead back to Wilson with a layup to make the score 50-49. After Rosemont regained the lead on its return trip, Darren Green (So., Silver Spring, Md. / Springbrook) put the Phoenix up for good with a layup of his own with 12:12 left to go in the game.
  • The Ravens stayed within striking distance for the time being, but the Phoenix were just too hot on this night. An Ibraheem Bundu (So., Largo, Md. / CCBC Dundalk) layup on a dish from Gary Robertson (Jr., Washington D.C. / Potomac / Bryant and Stratton) eventually put Wilson up 69-59 with 5:53 to go, and the Phoenix just got stronger from there. Then three consecutive turnovers by the Ravens transitioned into fastbreak layups by Darryl Garib (Sr., Dallas, Texas / Forest Park), Robertson, and Godwin to give Wilson an 18-point lead, its largest of the game, in the final minute.
Inside The Numbers
  • Godwin's 25 points came on a night where he was 9-of-12 from the field and a lethal 5-for-7 behind the arc. He filled up his stat line with six rebounds and four assists as well.
  • Garib was right behind him with 21 points and was 9-for-13 overall with five boards.
  • Bussey finished his night with 13 points and made all but one of the seven attempts he took. He led all players with seven rebounds.
  • Marcus Stephens (Gr., Goldsboro, N.C. / C.D. Hylton / Virginia Wesleyan) rounded out the Phoenix quartet in double-figures with 12 points for a new career high. He was 5-for-8 with a 3-pointer and pulled down four rebounds.
  • Rosemont countered with Jared White who went for 21 points and was 10-for-12 from the field. Mike Herrin and Mahki Jones added 12 and 10, respectively.
  • With overall rebounds in fewer numbers than most nights, Wilson had an even bigger advantage in outrebounding the Ravens 32-18.
  • Even though Godwin's long range from outside helped the Phoenix, most of the Wilson's work came from the inside as it overcame 11 Rosemont 3-pointers to outscore the hosts 58-28 inside the paint.
  • The win is the fifth consecutive for the Phoenix, their longest streak since winning nine-straight last season.
