Garib's 32 Leads Phoenix Over Lions

(BRYN ATHYN, Pa.) – The weather may have been cold outside, but Wilson kept it hot inside as it defeated Bryn Athyn by a score of 77-61 on Wednesday evening. The Phoenix offense shot over 50% for the third consecutive game largely in part from the efforts of Darryl Garib (Sr., Dallas, Texas / Forest Park) who exploded for a season-high 32 points against the Lions.

The Basics

Score: Wilson 77, Bryn Athyn 61

Venue: Asplundh Field House

Records: Wilson 10-8, 4-3 CSAC; Bryn Athyn 8-10, 2-5 CSAC

How It Happened
  • The opening five minutes felt similar to Wilson's previous two games as the Phoenix hit four of their first six shots and sank a pair of free throws to jump out to a 10-4 lead. Garib, Antonio Bussey (Sr., Aiken, S.C. / Aiken / Claflin), and Gary Robertson (Jr., Washington D.C. / Potomac / Bryant and Stratton) were the catalysts Garib and Bussey evenly split the field goals while Robertson dished out a couple of assists and sank the free throws.
  • That lead eventually grew to 14-9 before Bryn Athyn started to rally. A pair of 3-pointers and free throws by the Lions followed and gave the hosts a 17-14 lead, but Wilson stayed within three. The teams exchanged leads twice before Garib finished the half on fire. He regained the lead for the Phoenix with a trey to make the score 30-27 and followed up with a steal and layup which forced the Lions to call a timeout. After Bryn Athyn scored on the opposite end, Garib closed the half with a layup to give Wilson a 34-29 lead at the break.
  • Wilson remained in control in the second half. After the Lions closed the deficit to two, a Garib layup sparked a 14-0 run that made the score 51-35 with 13:11 to go in the game. During that stretch, the Phoenix went 7-of-9 from the field. One of the misses was from Garib, but he was able to get his own rebound and lay it back in. Of course it wasn't just the offense getting it done. Defensively the Phoenix was able to shut down the Lions during that stretch with four steals, two of which came from Rick Godwin Jr. (Sr., Largo, Md. / Largo / Southern Maryland) which translated into six points. It was the turning point in the game and Wilson led by double-digits the rest of the way.
Inside The Numbers
  • Garib finished the night going 14-for-20 from the field and 2-for-4 behind the arc. He was effective on the glass as well with a season-high 16 rebounds for his ninth double-double of the season.
  • Godwin was also strong as he joined Garib in double-figures with 16 points. He was 5-for-11 from the field with a pair of triples and dished out five assists to lead the team.
  • Wilson shot 54.4% (31-for-57) for the game. The Phoenix have shot at least that well in each of their victories in their current three-game win streak.
  • Wilson controlled the paint the entire game and outscored Bryn Athyn inside 52-26. The Phoenix were 15-of-19 underneath the basket and 11-of-17 from the rest of the paint compared to 9-of-12 and 4-of-12, respectively, for the Lions.
