Murphy Records Double-Double As Phoenix Fall To Defenders

(CLARKS SUMMIT, Pa.) – Samira Murphy (Sr., Virginia Beach, Va. / Great Bridge Christian) recorded a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds, but it wasn't enough as Wilson fell to Clarks Summit in CSAC action on Saturday afternoon. The result splits the season series between the two after the Phoenix won at home back in early December.

The Basics

Score: Wilson 58, Clarks Summit 65

Venue: Huckaby Gymnasium

Records: Wilson 10-6, 7-3 CSAC; Clarks Summit, 8-7, 6-3 CSAC

How It Happened
  • A slow start for the Phoenix saw the Defenders jump out to a 15-2 lead in the opening 5:30 of the game. Wilson eventually got the offense churning and closed the opening quarter on a 10-4 run.
  • The Defenders extended their lead by two in the second quarter, but after some halftime adjustments the Phoenix were able to make a strong comeback attempt with a 10-0 run that put them within one. Murphy sparked the rally with a pair of layups. She was fouled on the second and hit the and-one free throw to cut the deficit to five. A jumper by Yaya Cannon (Sr., Lancaster, Pa. / Lancaster Catholic) followed before Laela Robinson (Fy., Lancaster, Pa. / Conestoga Valley) capped the run with a 3-pointer that made the score 41-40 with 1:18 to go in the third. Clarks Summit scored the next four points, but Robinson was able to keep the Phoenix within a possession by hitting a layup in the final seconds of the third.
  • Both teams exchanged layups to start the fourth with Adrianna Stricek (Fy., Harrisburg, Pa. / Trinity) scoring for Wilson to make the score 47-44, but it was the closest the Phoenix could get the rest of the way. The Defenders scored on their next three trips down the court and kept enough separation for the win.
Inside The Numbers
  • Murphy hit her 12 points on 5-of-11 from the field which included a 3-pointer. Her rebounds took game-high honors and were evenly split on the offensive and defensive end. Defensively she was strong and made three steals on the afternoon.
  • Robinson also finished in double figures with 10 points. She was 4-for-9 from the field with a 3-pointer and made two steals herself.
  • Cannon and Amanda Smida (Sr., Landenberg, Pa. / Avon Grove) each scored eight points after both were 4-for-5 on the day.
  • Clarks Summit's Elizabeth Singleton was the only player in double figures for the Defenders, but she proved tough to stop as she was 8-for-13 overall for 20 points. She was also a rebound shy of a double-double.
  • Clarks Summit's Serene Calderon pulled down 11 rebounds to lead the Defenders.
  • Overall Wilson shot better from the field and made 23-of-54 for 42.6% than Clarks Summit who made 24-of-66 for 36.4%, but the Defenders won the rebounding battle 43-32.
