Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Phoenix Fall On Road To Bryn Athyn

(BRYN ATHYN, Pa.) – The Wilson women's basketball team's historic win 10-game win streak came to an end as it fell to Bryn Athyn in a defensive game Wednesday evening.

The Basics

Score: Wilson 41, Bryn Athyn 48

Venue: Asplundh Field House

Records: Wilson 10-5, 7-2 CSAC; Bryn Athyn 7-8, 5-3 CSAC

How It Happened
  • Wilson held the lead on a couple of occasions early in the first quarter, but Bryn Athyn was able to regain the lead both times and held off the Phoenix's comeback attempts for the rest of the game. Samira Murphy (Sr., Virginia Beach, Va. / Great Bridge Christian) put Wilson on top the first time as she converted a 3-point play the old fashioned way after she was fouled on a layup after an assist from Madison Ross (Sr., New Oxford, Pa. / New Oxford). After the hosts regained the lead, Jewels Torres (Fy., York, Pa. / West York) came right back and gave Wilson a 5-4 lead with five minutes gone by in the first quarter. Unfortunately it would be Wilson's last field goal until the 8:22 mark of the second quarter.
  • On the opposite end, Bryn Athyn was able to capitalize and pushed its lead up to 15 points after a pair of free throws with 2:50 left in the second quarter. The Phoenix were able to generate some momentum and closed the half on a 7-0 run thanks to another layup paired with an and-one free throw from Murphy and a pair of baskets from Ross.
  • Wilson was able to keep the deficit in single digits the rest of the way and came within three points after a Bry Hicks (So., Lancaster, Pa. / Lancaster Catholic) layup made the score 42-39 with 2:11 to play. After the teams exchanged free throws, Wilson was left with an opportunity to tie the game, but the Lions forced a steal and capitalized from the free throw line after the Phoenix were forced to foul.
Inside The Numbers
  • Hicks led the Phoenix with nine points. Murphy followed with eight points.
  • Murphy was effective on the glass as she pulled down a game-high 14 rebounds. She added two blocks as well.
  • Bryn Athyn's offense was limited as well. The Lions' leading scorers of Kaylia Duncan and Kearah Henry were held to 11 points each.
Up Next
Wilson will look to get back in the win column on Saturday when it goes back on the road to take on Clarks Summit. Tip-off with the Defenders is set for 3 p.m.
