Ney, Kelso Lead Field Hockey To Win Over Royals

(HARRISONBURG, Va.) – A strong second half helped Wilson down Eastern Mennonite in field hockey action on the road on Wednesday night. Paige Ney (Fy., Biglerville, Pa. / Biglerville) and Brea Kelso (So., Shippensburg, Pa. / Shippensburg) each scored twice for the Phoenix as they handed the Royals just their second defeat.

How It Happened
  • Near the end of the first quarter Wilson was able to intercept possession as EMU had trouble clearing the ball. Kelso was able to find Ney at the top of the circle on the right who fired in the goal with 56 seconds left in the frame.
  • From there the game remained scoreless for the rest of the half. The Phoenix were able to keep the pressure on with nine shots in the second quarter, but only four were on target and all were saved.
  • Kelso came on strong in the third quarter as she scored both of her goals in the period. The first came as she and Ney switched roles with Ney assisting Kelso on a goal with 5:07 left in the third. Kelso was on the right post and took the pass from Ney who was in the center of the circle. Kelso's second was unassisted on a spin move in front of the goalie and also came late in the quarter with just 52 seconds remaining.
  • Eastern Mennonite was able to answer as Juliana Ghally scored with 10:53 to go in the game, buy Ney scored her second on a dish from Alexis Pflumm (Sr., Camden, Del. / Caesar Rodney) during a 4-on-3 odd player rush.
Inside The Numbers
  • The Phoenix did well to control the tempo of the game as they controlled the possession for the majority of the contest. In turn they outshot the Royals 24-6 in the contest. Of those 24, 15 were on target for Wilson compared to just one for EMU.
  • Penalty corners also favored the Phoenix by a 7-3 margin.
  • The Phoenix complete their stretch of four games against teams from Virginia with a record of 2-2.

Wilson now sets its sights on defending the CSAC crown and opens up conference play next weekend. First up is a date with Cedar Crest on the road on Saturday, Oct. 8. Game time is currently set for 1 p.m.
