Lacrosse Bounced from Playoffs

BALTIMORE, Md. - The Wilson College women's lacrosse teams bid for a second straight appearance in the CSAC championship game fell short this afternoon as the Phoenix (6-9) fell to the Gators (8-5) of Notre Dame of Maryland University by a final score of 15-7 in the CSAC semi-finals.

How It Happened: The Gators wasted no time in scoring as they corralled a failed free position attempt and was able to find the back of the net for a 1-0 lead just 70 seconds into the opening period. The Phoenix had an answer as sophomore Sage Lague ripped a shot past the Gators goalie to knot things up at 1-1. Three straight goals in a span of just over 90 seconds propelled the hosts to a 4-1 advantage. Lague would win the next draw control and freshman Jordan Hastie would beat the goalkeeper to make it a 4-2 game. A late goal by the Gators made the advantage 5-2 after the opening period. The second period was all Gators as the hosts rattled off 6 straight goals, while limiting the Phoenix to just 1 shot attempt, to take a commanding 11-2 lead into the intermission. Three more goals to open the third period pushed the lead to 14-2 before Lague recorded her 2nd goal of the day to give the Phoenix some life heading to the final period. Back-to-back goals by sophomore Anna Gibson, with an assist from junior Paige Reynolds, and Lague's 3rd of the day pulled the Phoenix within 14-5. After a Gators goal, Reynolds dished one to sophomore Kayla McHugh to make the score 15-6. The Phoenix continued to battle as Gibson scored her 2nd goal with an assist from freshman Hope Sanders to make it 15-7, but that would be the final tally for the team as the Gators claimed the victory.

Inside the Box Score:  The Gators out shot the Phoenix 29-12 and committed just 3 turnovers. A 12-11 edge in draw controls also favored the Gators. Lague led the Phoenix with 3 goals, while Gibson tallied 2 goals. Reynold paced the team with 2 assists while Fulfer recorded 10 saves in goal.

Up Next: This concludes the 2022 season for the Phoenix.
