#1 Christopher Newport Tops Softball in NCAA Opener

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The Wilson College softball team battled the nations #1 ranked team this evening in the Newport News regional of the NCAA tournament. Christopher Newport put up four runs in the first inning as the Captains (38-1) went on for an 8-0 victory over the Phoenix (23-12-1).

How It Happened: On a day that started with a rain delay, the Phoenix were excited to get on the field to compete in the NCAA tournament for just the second time in the history of the program. The Phoenix previously appeared in the NCAA tournament in 2019. The task would be tall for the Phoenix as the Captains boast a potent offense and dominant pitching staff. Junior Alyssa Wenger (Chambersburg, PA., Chambersburg) got the Phoenix offense started as she forced the Captains pitcher to rush and make an errant throw to first base that allowed Wenger to get into scoring position. The Captains were able to get out of the inning after getting junior Taylor Barker (Chehalis, WA., WF West) to line out on a hard hit ball to shortstop. In the bottom of the 1st, a misplayed ball, a walk, and a hit-by-pitch loaded the bases for the Captains clean-up hitter Katie Currin. Currin took the first pitch and drove it over the left center field fence for the grand slam and a 4-0 lead. Later in the inning, a two-out double plated two more runs and the Captains led 6-0 after one inning of play. The Phoenix had their best opportunity to score in the 2nd inning. Graduate student Jenna Carty (Chambersburg, PA., Greencastle-Antrim) led off with a single up the middle and classmate Meghan Bradley (Warrington, PA., Central Bucks South)smashed a double down the left field line to put runners on 2nd and 3rd base with 1 out. However, the defense was able to work out of the jam without giving up a run. The Phoenix played great defense in the bottom of the 2nd, nearly turning a double play as sophomore Naomi Butterfield (Nampa, ID, Timberline High School) got the lead out on a toss to sophomore shortstop Haiden Brookens (Fayetteville, PA, Chambersburg Magnet) for the lead out. The next hitter lined a shot that Barker was able to snag and step on 1st base for the unassisted double-play. After a quiet 3rd inning, the Captains added 2 more runs in the fourth to push their lead to 8-0. The Phoenix went down in order in the top of the 5th and the Captains claimed the 8-0 victory in 5 innings due to the NCAA eight-run rule.

Inside the Box Score: Bradley and Carty tallied the only two hits for the Phoenix. The Captains held a 6-2 edge in hits. Junior Marina Monsalve (Corona, CA., Centennial) took the loss in the circle after giving up 8 runs on 6 hits. Senior Delaney Glazer (Rochester, WA., Rochester) threw 1.2 innings in relief without allowing a hit.

Up Next: The Phoenix will take on Hunter College in an elimination game scheduled for 1:30 p.m. tomorrow.
