CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - The Wilson College men's volleyball team played host to the Mounties of Mount Aloysius in a nonconference match. The Phoenix (1-5, 1-1 CSAC) were defeated by Mounties (4-13, 0-8 AMCC) by a score of three sets to none, with set scores consisting of 25-17, 25-11, 25-13.
How It Happened: Both teams started the match off trading kills until the score was knotted-up at seven points apiece. During the opening stanza, senior
Andrew Hetzer (Chambersburg, PA., Cumberland Valley Christian), senior
Shae Cardenas (Torrance, CA., West Los Angeles CC), junior
Noah Wickenheiser (Cresco, PA, Notre Dame), and freshman
Jackson Cordell (Waynesboro, PA, Waynesboro Area Senior H.S.) all tallied kills. After this, Mount Aloysius started a 10-2 run that pushed them in front, 17-9. The Phoenix started to rally back and gained some momentum late but could not overcome the early run as they dropped the first set by a score of 25-17. In the second set, Wilson jumped out to a 3-1 lead;
Cardenas chipped in a block during the run. Soon after, the Mounties jumped on a 14-2 run that flipped the scoreboard and placed Mount Aloysius in front, 15-6. The Phoenix went on to drop this set two by a score of 25-11. In the final set, both opponents started neck-and-neck, with neither one establishing a solid lead early on. After the Mounties jumped out to a 13-6 lead, Wilson started to rally back, but they could not complete the comeback as they dropped the final set to a score of 25-13.
Inside the Box Score: Cardenas paced the offense tallying ten kills, while
Cordell and
Hetzer finished with five and two, respectively.
Cordell and senior
Eric Holz (Williamsport, PA., Loyalsock Township) both finished with one block apiece, while
Hetzer set up 18 assists. Sophomore
Ian Ruiz (Trujillo Alto, Puerto Rico, Colegio y Noviciado Santa Maria del Camino) and
Wickenheiser added four and three digs, respectively, in the match. The Phoenix finished with 20 kills on 65 attempts against 19 errors, while their opponent finished with 35 kills on 66 attempts against 11 errors.
