BALTIMORE, Md. - The Wilson College women's basketball hit the road earlier this evening, taking on the Gators of Notre Dame of Maryland in a Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) affair. The Phoenix (10-10, 9-5 CSAC) fought hard but were defeated by the Gators (10-9, 10-5 CSAC) by a final score of 66-51.
How It Happened: Both teams were neck and neck through the first three minutes of play, as senior
Tioleaoauli Posiulai (Waipahu, HI., University Laboratory School) tied the score up at six off a layup in the paint. Notre Dame spent the next six minutes of a 12-6 run that brought the score to 18-12. The Phoenix then scored four unanswered, bringing the score within two points, 18-16. Senior
Baylen Snyder (Dover, PA, Dover Area) and junior
Samira Murphy (Virginia Beach, VA., Great Bridge Christian) supplied points during the run but, the Gators answered back with five points of their own that brought the score to 23-16 at the end of the first quarter. In the second stanza, junior
Naomi Hanton (Bristow, Va., Keystone College) got the scoring started for Wilson. The Phoenix continued to push, eventually cutting their opponents lead to seven points with four and a half minutes left in the first half. After seven unanswered points from Notre Dame, Wilson closed outs the half with a burst of foul shots from
Hanton and
Murphy that brought the score to 36-26 at the half.
The Gators started the second half on an 8-2 run that ballooned their lead to 16 points midway through the third quarter. The Phoenix continued to fight, closing out the quarter on an 11-7 run that cut the deficit to 51-39, going into the final period. Wilson strung together several runs in the quarter but could not come away with the victory as they dropped this game by a final score of 66-51.
Inside the Box Score: Murphy led the offense with her 11th double-double of the season, coming up with 17 baskets and 15 boards while shooting a perfect 5-5 from the foul line.
Snyder chipped in ten points while adding seven rebounds and three assists. Junior
Amanda Smida (Landenberg, Pa., Penn State Harrisburg) added eight points and five rebounds, while
Posiulai and
Hanton tallied six apiece. Junior
Yaya Cannon (Lancaster, Pa., Elizabethtown College) collected four points while coming up with a total of six offensive rebounds on her way to finishing with seven total. The Phoenix finished the night shooting a perfect 11-11 from the free-throw line.
