Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Phoenix Dropped by Defenders

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - The Wilson College women's basketball team squared off against the Defenders of Clarks Summit University earlier this afternoon in a Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) tilt. The Phoenix (10-11, 9-6 CSAC) were taken down by the Defenders (19-4, 15-1 CSAC) by a final score of 74-48. Prior to this afternoon's contest, Wilson honored their three seniors: Baylen Snyder (Dover, PA, Dover Area), Tioleaoauli Posiulai (Waipahu, HI., University Laboratory School), Michaela Singer (Annville, PA., Annville-Cleona)

How It Happened: Wilson got the scoring started right away with a jumper from junior Amanda Smida (Landenberg, Pa., Penn State Harrisburg). Both teams were neck and neck throughout the first period of play with neither one establishing a solid lead. Later on, still in the first quarter with the score tied at eight, junior Samira Murphy (Virginia Beach, VA., Great Bridge Christian) knocked down a three followed by a jumper in the paint from junior Yaya Cannon (Lancaster, Pa., Elizabethtown College). that put the Phoenix up by five, with just over two minutes left in the quarter. Clarks Summit came back and tied the game up at 16 going into the second quarter. After Murphy got the scoring started with a layup, the Defenders responded with a three that put them up by one point. Shortly after, Wilson took a one-point lead off a jumper from Smida that gave the Phoenix a 26-25 advantage. This sparked a 13-4 run from Clarks Summit that flipped the scoreboard as Wilson walked into halftime trailing 38-30.

In the second half, the Defenders struck first with a shot from deep that extended their lead by 11 points. The Phoenix tried to string together a few runs in the quarter but could not find any rhythm as Clarks Summit ballooned their lead to 15 points by the end of the third quarter, 54-39. Wilson continued to fight in the fourth quarter, but the deficit proved to be too large as they dropped this game by a final score of 74-48.

Inside the Box Score: Murphy led the offense with 17 points while leading the team in rebounds with nine while Smida added 11 points and five rebounds. Junior Naomi Hanton (Bristow, Va., Keystone College) tallied 11 points while Cannon chipped in six. Posiulai and Snyder ended the game with two points each. The Phoenix finished the game shooting 27% from the floor while their opponent finished shooting 45%.
