CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - The Wilson College women's basketball played host to the Giants of Keystone College earlier this evening in a Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) affair. The Phoenix (10-9, 9-4 CSAC) put on a gritty performance but were edged out by the Giants (12-7, 10-4 CSAC) by a final score of 82 to 76.
How It Happened: Wilson got the scoring started with a layup from junior
Amanda Smida (Landenberg, Pa., Penn State Harrisburg), but Keystone came right back and answered with a three. On the next Phoenix possession, junior
Samira Murphy (Virginia Beach, VA., Great Bridge Christian) knocked down a layup in the paint, but again, the Giants responded right back with another three. Shortly after, senior
Tioleaoauli Posiulai (Waipahu, HI., University Laboratory School) tied at six apiece the game up with another layup for Wilson. The two opponents spent the next four minutes trading points back and forth until the game was knotted up at 16 points each with just over two minutes left in the first quarter. After Keystone jumped ahead by three, senior
Baylen Snyder (Dover, PA, Dover Area) drilled a shot from deep that evened the game up at 19 going into the next quarter. In the second quarter, the Phoenix jumped on a five-point run that extended their lead to five.
Smida and junior
Naomi Hanton (Bristow, Va., Keystone College) fueled the run with a three and a layup, respectively. The Giants then started a five-point run that flipped the scoreboard and put them on top by two, 32-30.
Hanton ended the run with a layup that tied the game up at 32 with three and a half minutes left in the first half. Both teams continued to battle as Wilson walked into halftime trailing by one, 39-38.
In the second half, Keystone started a 10-6 run that extended their lead to 49-44. The Phoenix went to work and started chipping away at the deficit until the game was deadlocked at 58 with 34 seconds in the third quarter. The Giants managed to score the last points of the third, giving them a 60-58 advantage going into the final quarter of play.
Posiulai leveled the game up at 60 points on the opening possession of the fourth quarter. After that, Wilson scored seven unanswered points that put them on top 67-60 with just under eight minutes left in the game. The Giants answered back with a nine-point run that propelled them out in front, 69-67. The Phoenix ended the run on an and-one layup from junior
Yaya Cannon (Lancaster, Pa., Elizabethtown College) that put them up by one, 70-69. After a steal from
Murphy, she managed to connect on a layup that put Wilson up by three points, 72-69. Keystone closed out the final minutes of play on a 13-4 run as the Phoenix dropped this one by a final score of 82-76.
How It Happened: Hanton finished the game tallying a double-double, leading the team in points (21) while coming up with 11 rebounds.
Posiulai also amassed a double-double, coming up with 19 boards, her career-high, while adding 17 points.
Murphy totaled 14 points and seven rebounds while
Cannon rounded out double-digit scorers with 10 points and seven rebounds while
Snyder and
Smida both added seven points. Wilson outscored their opponent 46-21 inside the paint while the bench outscored their bench 21-0. This game also featured 13 tied scores.
