Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men's Basketball Pummels Patriots

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - The Wilson College men's basketball team continued Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) play taking on the Patriots of the University of Valley Forge, earlier this afternoon. The Phoenix (15-5, 11-0 CSAC) took down the Patriots (5-13, 2-10 CSAC) by a final score of 88-63. Prior to today's game, the men's basketball team honored their seniors: Anthony Desruisseau (Burtonsville, MD., Springbrook HS), Andre Johnson (Saluda, VA., Christchurch School), and Adrian Thomas (Germantown, MD., Northwest HS)

How It Happened: Valley Forge started the game on a 5-2 lead after making their opening layup and a three-pointer. Wilson slowly started the creep back into it after junior Darryl Garib (Dallas, TX., Forest Park) scored seven straight points, followed by a layup from Thomas that brought the score to within one point, 10-9. The Patriots kept control of the lead until Wilson flipped the scoreboard off a layup from Thomas that put the Phoenix up by one, 18-17. After this, Wilson started a 14-3 run that extended their lead to 32-20 with just over four minutes left in the first half. During the run, the Phoenix offense was fueled by: a dunk from junior Antonio Bussey (Aiken, SC, Claflin Univ.), threes from juniors Kennedy Birdwell (Temple Hills, MD., Fairmont Heights) and Jordan Miles (Waldorf, MD., Westlake), and layups from Thomas and Garib. After six unanswered points from Valley Forge, Birdwell knocked down another three that stopped the run. On the very next possession, Miles drilled his second three-pointer of the night, followed by another from Birdwell, which gave Wilson a 15 point advantage with one minute remaining in the first half. Altogether, the Phoenix closed out the half with 11 unanswered points, giving them a 43-26 lead going into the half.

Opening up the second half, the Patriots managed to cut their deficit to 15 points; Wilson responded with a 9-4 run that pushed the score to 57-35. The Phoenix continued to push the score, starting another run shortly after which extended their lead to 70-39 with under ten minutes left in the game. Wilson never looked back as they went on to take this game by a final score of 88-63.

Inside the Box Score: Thomas and Garib paced the offense with 20 points each. Garib led the team in rebounds (8) while Thomas finished the game shooting 9-12 from the floor. Miles had another fantastic night shooting as he finished with 17 points while going 5-9 from three-point land, while junior Jeremiah Carter-Johnson (Richmond, VA., Mills E. Godwin) added 11 points, his season-high. Birdwell chipped in 9 points, all from three, while Bussey and Johnson notched four and three, respectively. Wilson finished the night shooting 51% from the floor while limiting their opponent to just 41%.

Up Next: The Phoenix will travel to Saint Elizabeth University on Wednesday, February 9, where they will take on the Eagles (4-13, 4-5 CSAC) in a CSAC matchup starting at 7 p.m.
