Eagles Upend Phoenix

MORRISTOWN, NJ.- The Wilson College men's basketball team hit the road for a Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) tilt with Saint Elizabeth University. The Eagles (5-14, 5-6 CSAC) pulled off a surprising victory over the Phoenix (15-6, 11-1 CSAC) handing the top team in the CSAC their first conference loss of the season by a final score of 58-56.

How It Happened: The Eagles jumped out to an early 8-2 lead before a three-pointer by junior Daeshaun Johnson (Waldorf, MD, St. Charles HS) and a free throw and jumper by senior Adrian Thomas (Germantown, MD., Northwest HS) knotted the game at 8-8. Just before the midway point of the first half, a jumper by junior Darryl Garib (Dallas, TX., Forest Park) gave the Phoenix a one point advantage at 14-13, but a quick Eagles answer gave the hosts the lead and they would never trail again in the game. Leading by two with five minutes to play in the half, the Eagles used a 7-0 run to extend their lead to nine. A pair of free-throws by junior Jordan Miles (Waldorf, MD., Westlake) stopped the run, but the Phoenix would trail at the intermission by a score of 32-24. A bucket to open the second half gave the hosts their first double-digit lead of the game at 34-24. A jumper followed by a steal and a layup by junior Warrick Godwin Jr. (Largo, MD, ) pulled the Phoenix within six. Over the next several minutes the Phoenix would chip away at the deficit and a bucket in the paint by Garib would tie things up at 36-36. A huge 18-6 run would follow for the Eagles to give them their largest lead of the game at 54-42 with just under seven minutes to play. However, the Phoenix battled back with a 12-0 run, highlighted by back-to-back hoops by freshman Darren Green (Silver Spring, MD, Springbrook HS) and a pair of buckets by senior Anthony Desruisseau (Burtonsville, MD., Springbrook HS) to again tie the game at 54-54 with 90 seconds remaining. With the game tied at 56, the Eagles knocked down a pair of free-throws with just over 30 seconds left on the clock. The Phoenix finished the game with a pair of empty possessions as the Eagles held on for the 58-56 victory.

Inside the Box Score: Garib tallied his sixth double-double of the season with a game high 16 points and 13 rebounds. Thomas and Miles were the only other Phoenix to reach double-digits with 13 points and 10 points respectively. The Phoenix committed a season low 11 turnovers, but also shot a season low 7% (1 of 13) from behind the arc.

Up Next: Wilson will look to rebound on the road next Wednesday as the team travels for a showdown between the top two teams in the CSAC at Rosemont College.
