Phoenix Leap Over Lions

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa.- The Wilson College women's basketball team hosted the Bryn Athyn Lions for the first round of the Colonial States Athletic Conference playoffs. The Phoenix (12-13,10-8 CSAC) were victorious over the visiting Lions (9-14,8-10 CSAC) winning 53-44. 

How It Happened: Senior Tioleaoauli Posiulai (Waipahu, HI., University Laboratory School) started the score for the Phoenix with a good free throw within the first 12 seconds of action. In the first quarter, Wilson scored half of their points from the free-throw line, totaling six of their 13 points.  The Phoenix started the second quarter trailing 17-13 and would look to gain a lead. A six-point run from Wilson would gain them the lead at 22-21 with 2:52 remaining in, the half. The Lions responded finishing the first half with a one-point advantage over the Phoenix. 

The third quarter marked a shift in the Phoenix offense. A layup by junior Samira Murphy (Virginia Beach, VA., Great Bridge Christian) with 6:25 remaining started a 10-4 point scoring run to close out the quarter for Wilson. The fourth quarter started with an early block from Murphywhich led to a quick layup from senior Baylen Snyder (Dover, PA, Dover Area) to expand the Phoenix lead to 42-31 after just 40 seconds of play. Bryn Athyn looked to recover from being down by 11 at the start of the fourth but was held short by the Wilson defense. The Phoenix went on to win the game with a final score of 53-44. 

Inside the Box Score: Junior Samira Murphy earned her tenth double-double of the season with 15 points, 16 rebounds, seven blocks, and five steals. Junior Yaya Cannon (Lancaster, Pa., Elizabethtown College) was right behind Murphyearning 13 points, four rebounds, and a team-high of six steals.

Up Next: Wilson will hit the road for a semi-final match-up against the one seed, Clarks Summit University (21-4, 17-1 CSAC) Wednesday, February 26 at 7:00 p.m.
