CHAMBERSBURG, Pa.- Wilson College women's basketball team faced off against the visiting Gators of Notre Dame of Maryland University for the second time within a week. The Phoenix (10-12,9-7 CSAC) battled hard, but the Gators (11-9,11-5 CSAC) ended the game on top with a final score of 70-66.
How It Happened: Junior
Samira Murphy (Virginia Beach, VA., Great Bridge Christian) opened the game with a quick jumper in the paint. A steal by senior
Baylen Snyder (Dover, PA, Dover Area) led to a pass to junior
Yaya Cannon (Lancaster, Pa., Elizabethtown College) who finished a layup to put the Phoenix up 4-0. A few minutes later, the same steal and score combo from
Snyder and Cannon pushed the Wilson lead to 9-3. The Gators, however, rallied back and tied the game at 13 with 2:41 left in the quarter. The Phoenix went into the second quarter holding a 16-15 lead over the Gators.
Cannon continued the offensive push and knocked in an early three to help build the Phoenix lead to 28-23 with four minutes remaining in the half. Notre Dame was able to recover offensively and come back to tie the game at 28 with 2:29 left on the clock. From here a late three by
Murphy carried the Phoenix into the half up 31-30 over the visiting Gators.
In the third quarter, Wilson's offense was hot scoring a total of 22 points, growing their lead by seven to enter the fourth quarter. The Phoenix ended the third quarter with four points from senior
Tioleaoauli Posiulai (Waipahu, HI., University Laboratory School) and a buzzer-beating three-pointer by
Cannon. In the fourth quarter, the battle continued with each team going point-for-point, standing deadlocked at 61 apiece with 3:20 remaining. Over the next three minutes, the Gator offense built their lead to their highest of the game leading the Phoenix 70-61 with 20 seconds remaining.
Murphy worked to cut the lead scoring three with 13 seconds remaining putting the score at 70-64. On the next offensive play,
Murphy was fouled shooting a three but time was against the Phoenix with one second remaining; she netted two baskets and attempted to rebound the third but time expired, leaving the score at 70-66 to end the game.
Inside the Box Score: Cannon led the offense with 21 points, while
Posiulai and Murphy each had 16 points and seven rebounds. The Gators had the advantage in the paint earning 38 to our 26 which pushed them to victory despite Wilson's higher shooting percentages.
