Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men's Hoops' Comeback Comes Up Short At Bridgewater

(BRIDGEWATER, Va.) – Gary Robertson (Jr., Washington D.C. / Potomac) and Darryl Garib (Sr., Dallas, Texas / Forest Park) both scored 15 points to lead Wilson, but it wasn't enough as it fell to hosting Bridgewater on Thursday evening. It's the first loss for the Phoenix on their current six-game road slate which will continue into the new year.

The Basics

Score: Wilson 65, Bridgewater 77

Venue: Nininger Hall

Records: Wilson 6-5, Bridgewater 5-5

How It Happened
  • It was a fast start for the Eagles who led for the duration of the game. Even though Bridgewater built up a 15-point lead in the first six minutes of the game, the Phoenix did well to keep them in check and threatened throughout the game. Immediately after the aforementioned advantage took place, Wilson got back into the game thanks to Robertson catching fire. He started an 8-1 rally after a layup paired with an and-one free throw, a jumper in the paint, and a traditional 3-point bucket that put the score at 20-12 in a span of 1:42.
  • Bridgewater eventually built up its lead and went up 20 at 45-25 with 2:33 to go in the first half, but the Phoenix were able to cut that deficit by going on a 9-2 run to close the frame.
  • Wilson made another strong run midway through the second half. After the Eagles pushed their lead back up to 17, the Phoenix came within one after an18-2 run over the course of 8:34. Jeremiah Carter-Johnson (Sr., Richmond, Va. / Mills E. Godwin) sparked the rally with five points early in the comeback attempt. Garib closed it with five points of his own which included a trey to cap it.
  • Another 3-pointer, this time from Jordan Miles (Sr., Waldorf, Md. / Westlake) put the score at 62-61 with 8:56 to play, but it was the closes the Phoenix could get the rest of the way. Wilson kept the deficit in single digits until the final minutes when Bridgewater hit a pair of 3-pointers to halt the comeback attempt.
Inside The Numbers
  • Robertson and Garib both led the Phoenix with 15 points each. Both shot well from the field as they equaled each other and went 5-for-10. Robertson hit a pair of triples while Garib pulled down five rebounds.
  • Rick Godwin Jr. (Sr., Largo, Md. / Largo / Southern Maryland) and Miles made it a quartet of Phoenix in double figures as they scored 12 and 10 points, respectively. The duo joined Robertson and Garib in going 50% from the field. Godwin went 4-for-8 while Miles finished 3-for-6. Miles hit a pair of 3-pointers as well while Godwin led the team with seven boards.
  • Wilson narrowly outshot Bridgewater by a 47.7%-to-47.5% margin, but the Eagles were able to take advantage of Phoenix miscues and outscored them 26-16 in points off turnovers.
  • Wilson controlled the glass by a 35-29 margin.
For The Eagles
  • Bridgewater featured a balanced offense with five players in double figures. Shod Smith led the way with 22 points and was 9-of-13 from the field. He filled up his stat sheet with eight assists and five steals as well.
Up Next
