(BRIDGEWATER, Va.) – A tough Bridgewater defense proved difficult for Wilson to penetrate as it fell in its first post-Thanksgiving Day contest on Sunday evening. The Phoenix were limited to just one player in double figures while the unbeaten Eagles had a balanced offense with four players accomplishing the feat thanks to a strong inside game.
The Basics
Score: Wilson 75, Bridgewater 46
Venue: Nininger Hall
Records: Wilson 2-3, Bridgewater 5-0
How It Happened
- The Eagles set the tone early by taking an 8-0 lead to start the game. In addition to fast scores, Bridgewater also asserted its dominance on the glass. Thankfully for the Phoenix, the Eagles had some trouble converting the extra chances into points. That allowed Wilson to get into the game and eventually cut the deficit to 12-7 following a Yaya Cannon (Sr., Lancaster, Pa. / Lancaster Catholic) layup with just over four minutes left in the opening quarter.
- Unfortunately for the Phoenix, it was the closest they would get. The Eagles scored six of the next eight points to close the frame, and ended up getting hot in the second quarter where they shot 52.94% (9-of-17) in the period, the best quarter of the game by either team. At halftime, Wilson trailed 40-23.
- The defensive pressure put on Bridgewater reached an apex in the third quarter. The Phoenix defense also limited the Eagles to their fewest points of any quarter, but Wilson couldn't take advantage on the other end as it was limited to one field goal.
Inside The Numbers
- Samira Murphy (Sr., Virginia Beach, Va. / Great Bridge Christian) led the Phoenix with 11 points with the majority coming from the free throw line where she was 7-for-10. Laela Robinson (Fy., Lancaster, Pa. / Conestoga Valley) and Bry Hicks (So., Lancaster, Pa. / Lancaster Catholic) were close the double figures with nine each.
- Bridgewater's Riley Corcoran led all scorers with 17 points. India Dailey and Erika Nettles both added 11 points for the Eagles, while Jaden Alsberry scored 10.
- Wilson was limited inside and on the glass all night. Bridgewater outscored the Phoenix in the paint 54-16 and held a 54-33 advantage in rebounds.
