CHAMBERSBURG, Pa- The Wilson College women's basketball team had their conference game of the season earlier this afternoon against the University of Valley Forge Patriots. The Phoenix secured their first conference win over the Patriots with a final score of 84-56.
How It Happened: The Phoenix started the game with a strong offensive presence with the first basket of the game being scored by
Samira Murphy (Virginia Beach, Va., Great Bridge Christian). Wilson ended the first quarter with a 10-3 run started by a good jumper from
Yaya Cannon (Lancaster, Pa., Lancaster Catholic) to extend the lead to 24-13 heading into the second quarter. The Phoenix offense would continue to be dominant as the first quarter by extending their lead in the opening minutes to 36-17 after seven minutes. A pair of good free throws from
Yaya Cannon as time expired in the second quarter would give the Phoenix a 20-point lead over the Patriots. In the third quarter, Wilson earned their largest lead of the game of a good jumper from
Madison Ross (New Oxford, Pa., New Oxford) to bring the score to 65-32 and give a 33-point lead to the Phoenix. To close out the game for Wilson,
Tiana Delgado (Lancaster, Pa., Lancaster Mennonite) scored the first points of her collegiate career off a good three-pointer. The Phoenix secured a win with a final score of 84-56 over the Phoenix.
Inside the Box Score: Adrianna Stricek (Harrisburg, Pa., Trinity) led the team with 20 points, 11 rebounds, four assists, and two steals, earning herself a double-double.
Amanda Smida (Landenberg, Pa., Avon Grove), Yaya Cannon, and
Samira Murphy each finished the game with double digits with 12, 11, and 10 points respectively. Wilson finished with 30 points in the paint and 33 points scored off of turnovers.
