Garib, Bussey Record Double-Doubles In Men's Basketball Win

(CHAMBERSBURG, Pa.) – Darryl Garib (Sr., Dallas, Texas / Forest Park) and Antonio Bussey (Sr., Aiken, S.C. / Aiken) both recorded double-doubles as Wilson downed Gallaudet in non-conference action on Tuesday evening. The Phoenix duo went a combined 18-for-28 and scored 39 points to help lift them over the Bison for their first win of the season.

The Basics

Score: Wilson 72, Gallaudet 55

Venue: Gannett Field House

Records: Wilson 1-2, Gallaudet 0-2

How It Happened
  • Wilson lived up to its Phoenix spirit and was on fire to start the game by making five field goals of the game to jump out to an 11-5 lead just over four minutes into the game. The hot start continued as they extended their lead to 21-5 after a Marcus Stephens (Gr., Goldsboro, N.C. / C.D. Hylton) triple with 13:14 to go in the half.
  • Not too long after, a dunk by Bussey followed by back-to-back 3-pointers from Rick Godwin Jr. (Sr., Largo, Md. / Largo) and Jordan Miles (Sr., Waldorf, Md. / Westlake) put the score at 29-7 with 8:32 to play in the first. It ended up being Wilson's largest lead of the night.
  • Gallaudet ended up cutting the deficit down to 10 before trailing 38-27 at the half. A Rory Lewis 3-pointer helped the Bison get back within single digits, but the momentum didn't last long as Godwin Jr. answered with a triple of his own to push the lead back into double digits for good.
  • Wilson ended up growing its lead back to 21 points as Garib started to take control. He lived inside the paint and built a strong foundation with 16 points in the second half alone.
Inside The Numbers
  • Garib scored 25 points to lead all scorers and was lethal from the floor where he shot 12-of-17. Bussey and Stephens joined him in double figures with 14 and 11 points, respectively. Bussey shot 6-for-11 while Stephens was 4-for-8.
  • Stephens and Godwin Jr. helped spark Wilson outside the arc as each of them had three 3-pointers.
  • Bussey and Garib also helped Wilson control the glass by a 41-28 margin. Bussey pulled down 12 rebounds for game-high honors, while Garib was right behind him with 10.
  • Gary Robertson (Jr., Washington D.C. / Potomac) did well to find the open man and filled up his stat line with 10 assists. He was a point shy of joining Bussey and Garib with a double-double.
  • Wilson controlled the paint all night and outscored Gallaudet inside by a 38-18 margin. Bussey had a large part to do with that as he rejected four Bison. He set the tone early with two blocks on the first two Gallaudet possessions.
  • As a team, Wilson easily had its best shooting night of the early season and made 50.9% (28-of-55) of its shots. On the opposite side the Phoenix limited the Bison to just 32.1% (17-of-53) on the night.
  • The Bison did have a trio of their own in double figures as well. Lewis led the bunch with 15 points. Preston Kelly followed with 12 while Lance Wood came off the bench to score 10.
