(CHAMBERSBURG, Pa.) – Four players scored in double figures and
Rick Godwin Jr. (Sr., Largo, Md. / Largo / Southern Maryland) tallied a double-double as Wilson defeated McDaniel in non-conference action on Saturday afternoon. After a couple of lead changes early in the first half, the Phoenix led the rest of the way, but the Green Terror kept it close throughout and threatened in the second half.
The Basics
Score: Wilson 62, McDaniel 48
Venue: Garrett Field House
Records: Wilson 2-2, McDaniel 2-2
How It Happened
- Wilson set the tone early with a couple of inside buckets by Antonio Bussey (Sr., Aiken, S.C. / Aiken / Claflin) and a 3-pointer by Godwin gave the Phoenix a 7-0 lead and forced McDaniel to call an early timeout just under two minutes into the game. The Green Terror were able to respond and eventually took a 12-11 lead on a triple by Jeong Hwang with 14:30 left in the first half. It was the only lead McDaniel had, however, as Wilson regained the advantage on a pair of Bussey free throws the next trip down the floor.
- The Phoenix excelled later in the first half as they went on 12-0 run to make the score 30-16 with 3:31 to go in the opening frame. Marcus Stephens (Gr., Goldsboro, N.C. / C.D. Hylton / Virginia Wesleyan) gave it the spark with a 3-pointer from the left baseline. Godwin then took over and scored the next nine points on a pair of free throws, a couple layups, and a triple of his own. Wilson eventually went into the locker room up 34-22 at the half.
- After teams exchanged the first four baskets of the second half, McDaniel made its move with a 10-0 run to pull within two at 38-36. Gary Robertson (Jr., Washington D.C. / Potomac) helped Wilson recover as he hit a 3-pointer and Bussey made a pair of free throws for a five-point answer. McDaniel's Drew Colman dropped in a 3-pointer to make it a four-point game afterwards, but it was the closest the visitors could get the rest of the way. Wilson was able to build its lead back up to double-digits and led by as many as 15 after a pair of Godwin free throws with just over a minute remaining.
Inside The Numbers
- Godwin finished with a game-best 18 points on 5-of-8 from the field. He was 2-for-4 behind the arc. He crashed the boards as well with 10 caroms, also a game-high, for his first double-double.
- Godwin's defensive numbers weren't limited to rebounds as he nearly had a triple-double with seven steals. Both teams had 15 turnovers, but the majority of McDaniel's came from streals from Godwin as well as one each from Stephens and Robertson.
- Free throws were a huge part of the game as Wilson was seemingly able to get to the charity stripe at will. Overall the Phoenix were rewarded with 36 attempts and converted 21 of them. On the opposite side, the Wilson defense stayed composed and allowed McDaniel just seven attempts in which it made four.
- Other double-figure scorers for the Phoenix included Bussey, Robertson, and Darryl Garib (Sr., Dallas, Texas / Forest Park). Bussey and Robertson poured in 12 each, while Garib was right behind them with 11.
- Ibraheem Bundu (So., Largo, Md. / CCBC Dundalk) came off the bench to play some valuable minutes defensively. Late in the game as McDaniel was attempting to rally, Bundu blocked shots on consecutive Green Terror possessions with Wilson's lead in single digits. He had three overall in the game.
For The Green Terror
- Charles Contee led the visitors with 16 points. He was 6-of-10 from the field and converted both attempts behind the 3-point line and at the foul line.
