ALLENTON, Pa. - The Wilson College women's basketball team hit the road as they looked to bounce back, taking on the Falcons of Cedar Crest College in a Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) bout. The Phoenix (8-7, 7-3 CSAC) were neck and neck throughout the game but ultimately fell to the Falcons (3-10, 2-8 CSAC) by a final of 67-52.
How It Happened: Wilson got the game started with six quick points. Seniors
Michaela Singer (Annville, PA., Annville-Cleona),
Tioleaoauli Posiulai (Waipahu, HI., University Laboratory School), and junior
Yaya Cannon (Lancaster, Pa., Elizabethtown College) all added two points during the run. After this, Cedar Crest pulled things together on their end and started to chip away at their deficit, eventually tying the game up at 13 with just under three minutes left in the opening quarter. The Phoenix buckled down and ended the quarter on a 7-4 run that put them in the lead going into the next. Wilson started the second quarter on an 8-2 run that propelled them into the lead, 28-19, with five minutes remaining in the first half. The Phoenix defense showed up in a big way, only allowing seven points during this quarter as Wilson took a 33-24 lead going into halftime.
Coming out of the half, the Phoenix started with a layup from
Cannon to get things going. Cedar Crest responded with a 13-4 run that left things even with four and half minutes in the third. On the next several possessions, both opponents traded points, and the lead, back and forth until things were tied-up again at 43 apiece. After a Falcons foul shot,
Cannon connected on another layup that put Wilson up by one point going into the final quarter, 45-44. Junior
Samira Murphy (Virginia Beach, VA., Great Bridge Christian) kicked off the fourth quarter with a shot from deep that extended their lead to four points. Cedar Crest then took a ten-point run that flipped the score and put them on top, 55-48, with under five minutes remaining in the game. Despite the effort, the Phoenix went on to drop this game by a final of 67-52.
Inside the Box Score: Cannon finished one rebound of a double-double, finishing the night with 17 points and nine rebounds.
Singer rounded out players with double-digits, tallying 13 points and two assists, while
Murphy led the team with 12 rebounds while adding seven points. Junior
Naomi Hanton (Bristow, Va., Keystone College) finished with six points and six rebounds, while three others added points in the effort. This game featured five lead changes and seven tied scores while Wilson outscored their opponent in the paint, 30-20.
