CLARKS SUMMIT, Pa. - The Wilson College men's basketball resumed Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) play as they traveled to face Clarks Summit University. The Phoenix (12-5, 8-0 CSAC) defeated the Defenders (6-12, 3-5 CSAC) by a final score of 72-57.
How It Happened: Junior
Darryl Garib (Dallas, TX., Forest Park) got the scoring started with a layup early in the first half. Then on the next possession, junior
Warrick Godwin Jr. (Largo, MD, College of So. MD) buried a shot from beyond the arc that put Wilson up 5-0 in the early going. After Clarks Summit brought the score to within one point, the Phoenix started a 10-4 run that extended the lead to 15-8. During the run, junior
Daeshaun Johnson (Waldorf, MD, St. Charles HS) ripped a deep three that helped push the Wilson lead further ahead. Later in the first half, the Phoenix shooting started to come alive as Wilson sank several shots from deep that helped propel them into a 32-15 lead with just under five and a half minutes remaining in the first half. Godwin Jr.,
Johnson, and senior
Anthony Desruisseau (Burtonsville, MD., Springbrook HS). Clarks Summit closed out the remaining time on a 16-5 run that brought them within striking distance before halftime.
Godwin Jr. ended the run with a layup and another three-pointer as the Phoenix took a 37-31 lead into the locker rooms. In the second half, junior
Kennedy Birdwell (Temple Hills, MD., Fairmont Heights) came out and drained back-to-back trifectas that pushed Wilson's lead to 10 points. The Phoenix never looked back as they went on to take this game by a final score of 72-57.
Inside the Box Score: Godwin Jr. had a monster game, scoring a season-high 33 points while going 12-16 from the floor, including 5-8 from three-point land.
Birdwell added 13 points, including three threes, while senior
Adrian Thomas (Germantown, MD., Northwest HS) added eight points, four rebounds, and four assists.
Garib and
Johnson each added six points while freshman
Darren Green (Silver Spring, MD, Springbrook HS) added three points and led the team with eight rebounds. Wilson led their opponent in field goal percentage, 48%-44%, and three-point shooting, 35%-25%, while outscoring them 12-4 on second-chance points.
