Men's Basketball Edges Lions

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - The Wilson College men's basketball team continued Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) play this afternoon, as they hosted the Lions of Bryn Athyn College. The Phoenix (13-5. 9-0 CSAC) snuck past the Lions (3-15, 1-7 CSAC) by a final score of 79-71.

How It Happened: Bryn Athyn started the out with the first five points before Wilson notched their first points off a layup from senior Adrian Thomas (Germantown, MD., Northwest HS). After the Lions added two more points, the Phoenix started to storm back thanks to back-to-back three's from junior Warrick Godwin Jr. (Largo, MD, College of So. MD) that cut the deficit to just one point. On the next Wilson possession, junior Darryl Garib (Dallas, TX., Forest Park) drilled a shot from deep that gave them a two-point advantage, 11-9. Bryn Athyn then spent the next five minutes chipping away until the game was tied at 19 apiece. Both opponents continued to trade points, and the lead, back and forth for the rest of the first half, until Wilson ended the half on a 6-2 run that gave them a one-point lead at halftime, 34-33.

In the second half, the Phoenix came out of the locker room shooting lights out. On the first three Wilson possessions of the half, Godwin Jr. knocked down three straight trifectas to extend their lead to five points, 43-38. A few possessions later, Godwin Jr. drained another three that extended the Phoenix lead back to five points, 49-44. The Lions then took a 9-3 run that flipped the score and put Bryn Athyn in front by one point with under ten minutes remaining in the game. The Phoenix responded with a 7-2 run that put them back in the lead, 59-55. The Lions managed to retake the lead, moments later, but Wilson composed themselves and retook the lead off a layup from Garib with just under six minutes left. Later in the half, with the Phoenix still in front, junior Kennedy Birdwell (Temple Hills, MD., Fairmont Heights) sunk two back-to-back threes that kept the Wilson lead at five points. The Phoenix never looked back after that, taking the game by a final score of 79-71.

Inside the Box Score: Godwin Jr. helped fuel the offense with a 26 point performance while shooting 8-16 from three-point land. Garib recorded his fifth double-double of the season, finishing the game with 18 points and, a team-high, ten rebounds. Birdwell and Thomas rounded out double-digit scorers with 11 points and ten points, respectively, while five others contributed during the game. Wilson was outscored in the paint, 30-22, while outscoring their opponents in second-chance points, fast break points, points off turnovers, and bench points.

Up Next: The Phoenix will hit the road to continue CSAC play on Wednesday, February 2, at 8 p.m.
