Men's Basketball Marches Past Patriots

Phoenixville, Pa. - The Wilson College men's basketball team rolled into the University of Valley Forge this evening to face off against the Patriots in a Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) matchup. The Phoenix (10-4, 6-0 CSAC) marched past the Patriots (4-9, 1-6 CSAC) by a final score of 85-71.

How It Happened: Wilson got off to a hot start as junior Jordan Miles (Waldorf, MD., Westlake) recorded the first points of the contest off a shot from deep, putting the Phoenix up 3-0. Shortly after, juniors Warrick Godwin Jr. (Largo, MD, College of So. MD) and Darryl Garib (Dallas, TX., Forest Park) knocked back-to-back threes that extended their lead to 9-5. This sparked a 13-5 run that put Wilson on top, 22-10, with just over twelve minutes left in the opening half. Valley Forge would not go down as they immediately started a 15-5 run that brought them within two points, 27-25, with just under seven and a half minutes remaining in the first half. Garib ended the run with another shot from beyond the arc. Both teams traded points back and forth but, the Phoenix managed to extend their lead to seven points with a minute and a half left, 42-35. The Patriots ended the first on a five-point run that brought the score to 42-40 at halftime.

Opening the second half, Valley Forge came out and tied the game up on the first possession. The two opponents traded points again until the game was even again, this time at 51 apiece off a layup on the paint from junior Jeremiah Carter-Johnson (Richmond, VA., Mills E. Godwin). He put Wilson up by one on the ensuing foul shot, earning him the and-one conversion. Things stayed neck and neck the next few possessions until the Phoenix fired off a 13 points spurt that propelled them in front, 67-53. During the run, freshman Darren Green (Silver Spring, MD, Springbrook HS) converted an and-one opportunity off an offensive rebound to help extend the lead. Wilson never looked back as they went on to win by a final score of 85-71.

Inside the Box Score: Garib led both teams with his fourth double-double of the season, leading both teams with an impressive 26 points and 17 rebounds. Godwin Jr. and Miles both corralled eight rebounds apiece while adding 23 and 14 points, respectively. Seven other Phoenix went on to add points in the victory. Wilson outrebounded their opponent 58-33 in this matchup;  they also outscored them inside the paint, 42-22.

Up Next: The men's basketball will host the Eagles of Saint Elizabeth University (3-10, 3-2 CSAC) in another CSAC showdown this Saturday, January 22, at 1 p.m.
