Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Late Three Propels Phoenix Over Highlanders

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - The Wilson College men's basketball team rattled off their seventh consecutive victory with a 57-54 come from behind victory over Cairn University this evening. The Phoenix (9-4, 5-0 CSAC) topped the Highlanders (8-7, 3-3 CSAC) by a final score of 57-54 to remain unbeaten in CSAC play.

How It Happened: The visiting Highlanders started the game on a 7-0 run, holding the Phoenix scoreless for the first four minutes of the game. A bucket by senior Adrian Thomas (Germantown, MD., Northwest HS) got the Phoenix on the board, but the Highlanders responded by pushing their lead to 14-2. A three-pointer by junior Darryl Garib (Dallas, TX., Forest Park) cut the deficit to single digits at 14-5 just before the midway point of the half. An 8-2 run by the Phoenix followed, highlighted by a layup by Thomas with a great assist from junior Jeremiah Carter-Johnson (Richmond, VA., Mills E. Godwin), made the score 19-13 in favor of Highlanders. The Phoenix worked to stay within striking distance late in the first half as freshman Darren Green (Silver Spring, MD, Springbrook HS) scored the final seven points for the hosts, but the Phoenix faced a double-digit deficit at 31-20 at the intermission. Early in the second half, the Highlanders grabbed their largest lead of the night at 15 points with just over sixteen minutes to play before Garib took over for the Phoenix. Back-to-back three-pointers by Garib made the score 37-28. Junior Kennedy Birdwell (Temple Hills, MD., Fairmont Heights) followed with back-to-back threes of his own, each with an assist from Garib, but the Phoenix still trailed by nine. The Highlanders seemed to weather the storm and grew their lead back to thirteen points with under twelve minutes to go in regulation. Over the next seven minutes, the Phoenix turned up the pressure defensively, forcing the Highlanders into turnovers and missed shots which led to a 13-0 run culminating in a pair of made free throws by junior Warrick Godwin Jr. (Largo, MD, ) to tie the game at 47-47 with 5:31 to go. A three-pointer by Garib gave the Phoenix their first lead of the game at 52-50 with 4:12 to go. The Highlanders tied it up before Garib hit another pair of free throws to again take the lead at 54-52. A layup with thirty-five seconds remaining by the Highlanders tied the game at 54 and set the stage for Garib's heroics. With the shot clock running down, Garib fired a long-range three-pointer that found the bottom of the net with 2.5 seconds left on the clock to give the Phoenix the 57-54 victory.

Inside the Box Score: Garib led all scorers with 20 points on 6-of-12 shooting from the floor including a career-high 5-of-8 from beyond the arc. Thomas added 8 points and a game-high 10 rebounds. Junior Daeshaun Johnson (Waldorf, MD, St. Charles HS) came off the bench and played solid defense while grabbing 8 boards while adding 3 assists. After shooting just 22% from downtown in the first half, the Phoenix shot 47% from distance in the second half. The Phoenix bench outscored the Highlanders by a 26-17 margin.
