Phoenix Top Vixens in CSAC Opener

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Just a few days after being postponed by Hurricane Ida, Wilson College and Sweet Briar College finally got to play their Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) opener, although it was still played in a light rain. The Phoenix (2-0, 1-0 CSAC) topped the Vixens (1-0, 0-1 CSAC) by a final score of 3-2.

How It Happened: During the opening three minutes, the Vixens recorded 3 penalty corners and 1 shot but was unable to convert. A penalty corner by the Phoenix in the fourth minute saw junior Alexis Pflumm (Camden, Del., Caesar Rodney) take a shot, but it was stopped by the Vixens keeper. Each team had a handful of penalty corners in the remaining minutes of the first period but neither team was able to score. After a back and forth second period, a flurry of shots in the final ninety seconds by the Phoenix applied serious pressure to the Vixens defense. Shots by sophomore Hayley Koller (Atglen, PA, Octorara), and freshman Rachel Rementer (West Chester, PA., Henderson), who fired three times on goal, were denied by the keeper.  However, the Phoenix cashed in as the horn expired just before the half when freshman Jordan Hastie (Frederick, MD, Govener Thomas Johnson) scored, with an assist from Rementer, as she beat the goalie for a 1-0 lead. In the third period, the Vixens wasted no time in knotting up the score. After a brilliant defensive save by super senior Jenna Carty (Chambersburg, PA., Greencastle-Antrim), Ingrid Kalwitz ripped a shot from just inside the circle that found it's way into the goal to make the score 1-1. A few minutes later, the Phoenix responded off a penalty corner when senior Breeann Sheaffer (Middleburg, PA., Midd-West) inserted to super senior Allison Reber (Narvon, PA., Garden Spot) who fed Koller in front of the cage and she beat the keeper on the left side for a 2-1 Phoenix advantage. The Vixens weren't done, as Kalwitz scored midway through the period to tie the game at 2-2. With less than four minutes to go in the third, super senior Michaela Singer (Annville, PA., Annville-Cleona) took a pass from Hastie and rattled the back of the cage to give the Phoenix a 3-2 lead heading into the final period. The fourth period was quiet as the two teams traded possessions until the final minute and twenty seconds of the game. The Vixens took three penalty corners and had a shot sail wide as the Phoenix defense held strong to bring a dramatic close to an exciting contest.

Inside the Box Score: The Phoenix held a 15-10 advantage in shots including a 14-7 edge in shots in goal. Wilson also enjoyed an 11-9 edge in penalty corners. Singer and Koller led the way with 4 shots each and Hastie added a goal and an assist in the victory. Carty's defensive save in the third period was the 12th of her career.

Up Next: Wilson will host Hood College in non-conference action on Wednesday at 5:00 p.m.
