Phoenix Roll Over Pioneers in Opener

HARRISONBURG, Va. - The Wilson College field hockey team opened the 2021 season with a 4-1 victory over Transylvania University this afternoon. The Phoenix (1-0) tallied four goals by four different players in the win over the Pioneers (0-1).

How It Happened: In the opening period the Phoenix dominated possession and manged four shots, two of which came off the stick of freshman Jordan Hastie (Frederick, MD, Govener Thomas Johnson), however none of them resulted in a goal. The Phoenix offense continued to dominate in the second period and the first goal of the season came as senior Breeann Sheaffer (Middleburg, PA., Midd-West) rattled the back of the cage with a double assist from Hastie and freshman Hailey Steele (Biglerville, PA, Biglerville) for a 1-0 advantage. Defensively, the Phoenix did not allow a shot by the Pioneers in the first half as the team held the 1-0 lead heading into the half. Less than six minutes into the third period the Phoenix extended the lead to 2-0 as the teams returning leading scorer, super senior Michaela Singer (Annville, PA., Annville-Cleona) scored with an assist from junior Alexis Pflumm (Camden, Del., Caesar Rodney). A Pioneer goal midway through the period cut the Phoenix lead in half at 2-1, but the team answered right back as super senior Allison Reber (Narvon, PA., Garden Spot) connected for a goal with an assist from Sheaffer to push the lead to 3-1. The Phoenix finished of the scoring midway through the fourth period as freshman Jordan Blizzard (Westminster, MD, Francis Scott Key) beat the keeper with an assist from Singer to make the final score 4-1.

Inside the Box Score: The Phoenix dominated every aspect of the game as the team held a 20-4 advantage in shots, including a 10-1 edge in shots on goal. The Phoenix also controlled penalty corners with a 13-2 advantage. The four goals scored were the most by the Phoenix since October 7 of 2019 when the team topped Bryn Athyn 8-0.
