Volleyball Drops Opener to Nittany Lions

ABINGTON, Pa. - The Wilson College women's volleyball team opened the season on the road with a non-conference tilt versus Penn State Abington. The Nittany Lions (5-5) topped the short-handed Phoenix (0-1) 3-0 by scores of 25-8, 25-20, and 25-18.

How It Happened: The first point of the season for the Phoenix came early in the first set as freshman Deah Menedis (Reisterstown, MD, Franklin High) got a kill with an assist from sophomore Myla Owens (Westampton, NJ., Rancocas Valley Regional High School). After a kill by junior Anika Eigen-Zucchi (Washington, D.C., St. Johns College High School) tied the match at 2-2, the Nittany Lions went on a 5-0 run to take a 7-3 lead. Later in the first set, the hosts again used a big run, this one 9-0, to push the lead to 17-4. The Phoenix continued to battle as back-to-back kills by Menedis and freshman Sage Lague (Fairplay, MD, Goretti) made it a 17-6 score, but the Nittany Lions pulled away at the end of the set for a 25-8 victory. In the second set, the Phoenix got off to a great start pulling ahead 7-4, highlighted by a pair of kills from freshman Niki Schussler (Chambersburg, PA, Cumberland Valley Christian). Later in the set, the Phoenix increased their lead to 12-6 before the Nittany Lions clawed back into the set by scoring 7 of the next 8 points to tie things up at 13-13. The teams continued to trade points until the set was tied at 20-20. However, the hosts rattled off the last 5 points of the set to claim a 25-20 victory in set 2. In the third and final set, the Phoenix again jumped out to an early lead as the team used a pair of kills and a service ace by Eigen-Zucchi for a 6-2 advantage. The Nittany Lions plugged away at the Phoenix lead and eventually knotted things up at 8-8 before another kill by Eigen-Zucchi and a block by Owens gave the visitors a 10-8 lead. Later in the set, the Nittany Lions took the lead with a 5-0 run to make the score 16-12. A service ace by Menedis and a kill by Eign-Zucchi stopped the run and pulled the Phoenix within two points at 16-14. Moving forward in the set, the Phoenix trailed 18-17 but the Nittany Lions closed the set and match out by scoring 7 of the last 8 points to claim the set 25-18 and the match 3-0.
