CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - The Wilson College baseball team took on the Highlanders of Cairn University earlier today in the Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) Semifinal Round. The Phoenix (21-4, 8-2 CSAC) swept the Highlanders (11-7, 8-4 CSAC) by scores of 4-3 in 10 innings and 3-2 in game two.
Game One: Junior
Cam Nolet (Annapolis, MD., S.C. Aiken) started on the mound for Wilson in game one, striking out three in the top of the first. Both teams battled throughout the game, with neither one gaining the lead. In the top of the fourth, Cairn struck first with a home run to right field. In the bottom half of the inning, freshman
Peyton Mason (Knoxville, MD, Boonsboro HS) knocked in a run with a single to right field, knotting the game at one apiece. The Highlanders managed to score two more runs in the top of the fifth inning, putting them out in front, 3-1. In the bottom of the sixth, junior
Juan Rosario (Hollywood, FL., Hollywood Hills) drove in a run off an RBI single to left-center, cutting Wilson's deficit to just one run. Senior
Dylan Procopio (Pittsburgh, PA., Westmoreland Community College) drove in the tying run, in the bottom of the eighth inning, with an RBI single to right field. Nine innings wouldn't be enough for this game, as both teams went into extra innings knotted up 3-3. Then, in the bottom of the tenth inning, senior
Jacob Whittington (Salisbury, MD., Univ. of the Sciences) wrapped up game one with a walk-off single to right, giving the Phoenix the 4-3 victory.
Inside the Box Score: Nolet threw for seven innings striking out 17 while junior
Trystan Housman (Harrisburg, PA., Bishop McDevitt) earns the win, throwing for two innings and striking out four.
Mason wrapped up game one going 2-4 with one RBI and one walk while
Rosario went 2-3 with one RBI and a walk.
Whittington added two hits and the game-winning RBI and
Procopio went 2-4 with an RBI. Wilson totaled four runs on 13 hits with three errors while Cairn added three runs on nine hits with one error.
Game Two: The Highlanders opened up game two with a two-run homer to right field in the top of the first. After this, the Phoenix bullpen would go to work, not allowing another hit for the rest of the game. Later on, in the bottom of the fourth,
Whittington cut the Wilson deficit to one run with an RBI groundout. Shortly after, in the bottom of the fifth, sophomore
Dean Mercer (Dunedin, FL., Clearwater Central Catholic) drove in the tying run. Both teams would battle but neither one could take the lead, that was until
Mercer slapped in the game-winning run with a walk-off single to shortstop. As the Phoenix took game two by a final score of 3-2.
Inside the Box Score: Senior
KJ Curry (Bowie, MD., Coker University) finished game two going 3-5 with a triple, junior
Brandon Cook (Glen Burnie, MD., Shepherd University) went 2-5, and sophomore
Michael Marrale (Sykesville, MD, Old Dominion Univ.) went 2-3 with a triple.
Whittington added one RBI and one walk while
Mercer went 2-5 with two RBIs. Junior
Dereck Ivey (Fairfield, PA., Fairfield) threw for seven in relief, striking out eight while not letting up any hits. Sophomore
Ben Looper (Columbia, MD., Oakland Hills) earns the win, throwing for the last inning. Wilson scored three runs on 11 hits with no errors while their opponent added two runs on two hits with one error.
