Baseball Falls to Giants in Game 1

La PLUME, Pa. - The Wilson College baseball team was on the road in the Colonial State Athletic Conference (CSAC) Baseball Championship series this afternoon. The Phoenix (21-5) fell to the top-seeded Giants of Keystone College (20-4) by a final score of 13-6. With the loss, the Phoenix must win two games tomorrow to claim the CSAC Championship and the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

How It Happened: Senior KJ Curry (Bowie, MD., ) led off the game with a single right back up the middle. Later in the inning, Curry would cross the plate when sophomore Dean Mercer (Dunedin, FL., Clearwater Central Catholic) laced a single that eventually led to a Giants error that allowed Curry to score. In the bottom of the first the Giants opened with three straight hits that tied the game at 1-1. After an infield miscue by the Phoenix, a 2-RBI double gave the Giants a 3-1 lead. Later in the inning, the Giants recorded another hit, this time a 2-RBI single to make the score 5-1. An unearned run would cross the plate with two outs on a wild pitch to close out a six run first inning for the hosts. Neither team could produce much offense over the next four innings until the bottom of the fifth when a home run by the Giants Adam Kelly pushed the lead to 7-1. The Phoenix loaded the bases with no one out in the top of the sixth, but the only run that would score was via a bases loaded walk drawn by graduate student James Husar (Oxford, CT., ) to make the score 7-2. Four runs in the bottom of the sixth gave the Giants an 11-2 lead. However, the Phoenix continued to battle as Curry led off the seventh with a double and junior Brandon Cook (Glen Burnie, MD., ) followed with an RBI triple to right. After Mercer was hit by a pitch, Cook scored on a double play ball. Sophomore Michael Marrale (Sykesville, MD) extended the inning with a single and scored on a double by junior Juan Rosario (Hollywood, FL., Hollywood Hills) to make the score 11-5. The Giants added a pair of runs in the bottom of the eighth and the Phoenix tallied a run in the ninth as Marrale blasted his fifth home run of the season to make the final score 13-6.

Inside the Box Score: Husar paced the Phoenix with a 3-for-4 effort at the plate while, Curry, Cook, and Marrale each collected two hits. On the bump, junior Cam Nolet (Annapolis, MD., ) took the loss after allowing 7 runs while striking out 6 in 5 innings of work.

Up Next: Game two of the championship series is set to stat at 12:00 p.m. tomorrow with the if necessary game to follow should the Phoenix win game 2.
