Softball Splits on Day 1 of CSAC Championships

ALLENTOWN, Pa. - The Wilson College softball team split a pair of games on day 1 of the Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) Softball Championships. The #2 seeded Phoenix (22-4) dropped the opener to the #3 seed Keystone College (15-6) by a final score of 5-3 and then topped the #5 seeded Eagles of Saint Elizabeth University (10-11) by a 12-4 mark.

How It Happened Game 1: The Giants got on the score board first in the top of the second inning with a pair of hits followed by a Phoenix error that allowed two runs to come home. In the bottom of the second, the Phoenix threatened as sophomore Taylor Barker (Chehalis, WA., WF West) and senior Jenna Carty (Chambersburg, PA., Greencastle-Antrim) led off with back-to-back singles and moved to second and third base on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore Alecia Hamilton (Canton, OH., Glenoak). However, the Giants worked out of the jam by inducing a pair of ground outs to keep the Phoenix off the board. In the top of the third the Giants struck again, this time with a 2-run homerun to push their lead to 4-0. The Phoenix answered in the bottom of the third as freshman Haiden Brookens (Chambersburg, PA, Chambersburg Magnet ) led off with a walk and senior Katey Roth (Lebanon, PA., Lebanon) followed with a single. Sophomore Delaney Glazer (Rochester, WA., Rochester) followed with a single of her own to load the bases with none out. Later in the inning, a throwing error on a ball off the bat of Barker brought home Brookens and Roth to make the score 4-2. Moving ahead to the seventh inning, the Giants added an unearned run in the top half to make it 5-2. The Phoenix added a run in the bottom of the seventh, but it wasn't enough as the Giants prevailed 5-3.

Inside the Box Score Game 1: Glazer led the Phoenix at the plate with a 2-for-3 effort that included an RBI. Barker, Carty, Brookens and sophomore Alyssa Wenger (Chambersburg, PA., Chambersburg) each tallied a hit. Graduate student Megan Potter (Hagerstown, MD., South Hagerstown) took her first loss of the season in the circle allowing 5 runs (3 earned) on 8 hits while striking out 11.

How It Happened Game 2: Facing elimination in game 2, the Phoenix wasted no time lighting up the scoreboard. A two out rally in the bottom of the first inning started with a single from sophomore Kaesey Greene (Taneytown, MD, Francis Scott Key). Glazer followed with a single and Barker cleared the bases with a 3-run blast to center field to make it 3-0. Carty followed with a single and senior Meghan Bradley (Warrington, PA., Central Bucks South) and Hamilton drew walks to load the bases. A single through the left by junior Jessica Kosheba (Marietta, PA., Donegal) brought home two runs and pushed the lead to 5-0. In the top of the third, the Eagles rallied with four runs, with the big blow coming on a 2-RBI double. The Phoenix took advantage of three wild pitches, a passed ball, and three walks to plate a pair of runs in the bottom of the third inning to make it 7-4. Another big inning for the Phoenix came in the fourth as five more runs crossed home plate. Carty led off the inning with a blast to center field, her sixth homerun of the season. Walks to Hamilton and Kosheba put two on for Wenger, who laced one to center field that scored Hamilton. Brookens followed with a 2-RBI single though the left side to push the score to 11-4. Glazer rounded out the scoring with an RBI-double to right center to make the score 12-4. Sophomore pitcher Makenna Snodgrass (Flagstaff, AZ., Flagstaff) shut the door on the Eagles in the top of the fifth to preserve the victory via the NCAA eight run rule.

Inside the Box Score Game 2: The Phoenix tallied 12 hits as a team with multiple hits from Wenger, Greene, Glazer, Carty, and Kosheba. Snodgrass improved to 4-0 on the season allowing 4 runs on 8 hits while striking out 2 in the win.

Up Next: The Phoenix will face off with Keystone in an elimination game tomorrow morning with the first pitch scheduled for 9:30 a.m.
