Softball Comes Up Short in CSAC Championship Game

ALLENTOWN, Pa. - The Wilson College softball team faced a tall order heading into the final day of the CSAC Championships. Having staved off elimination on Friday, the Phoenix (24-5) needed to win 3 games in a row on the final day to make a return trip to the NCAA Championships. The Phoenix defeated Keystone (15-7) 10-8 in the first game of the day and blanked top seeded Cedar Crest (19-3) by a score of 6-0 in the second game to force a winner take all championship game. In the finale, the Phoenix ran out of gas and fell to Cedar Crest by a score of 12-2.

How It Happened vs Keystone: The Phoenix jumped on top in the bottom of the first inning as sophomore Alyssa Wenger (Chambersburg, PA., Chambersburg) led off with a double to left field. She moved to third on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a groundout by sophomore Taylor Barker (Chehalis, WA., WF West). Both pitchers cruised along until the bottom of the fourth when the Phoenix added another run. Senior Meghan Bradley (Warrington, PA., Central Bucks South) led off with a triple to right field. After sophomore Alecia Hamilton (Canton, OH., Glenoak) reached on a hit-by-pitch, she and Bradley executed a double steal to make the score 2-0. In the sixth inning, the Giants bats came alive as they plated five runs on four hits to take a 5-2 lead. The Phoenix had an answer in the bottom half as junior Jessica Kosheba (Marietta, PA., Donegal) reached base and later advanced to third on a throwing error. Freshman Haiden Brookens (Chambersburg, PA, Chambersburg Magnet ) lined a single to center field that scored Kosheba and Wenger to pull the Phoenix within 5-4. In the seventh, Barker led off with a single and senior Jenna Carty (Chambersburg, PA., Greencastle-Antrim) followed with a single of her own. Bradley stepped to the plate and hit a clutch single up the middle that scored Barker and tied the game at 5-5 and sent the game to extra innings. The Giants scored three runs in the top of the eighth, the big blow coming on a two-run homerun. With the season on the line, the Phoenix needed three runs to keep the game going. Wenger hit a double to drive in Kosheba and Brookens followed with a single to score Wenger and later scored on an error to tie it at 8-8. With sophomore Kaesey Greene (Taneytown, MD, Francis Scott Key) on base, Barker stepped to the plate and crushed a walk-off homerun to deep left center for the 10-8 victory.

Inside the Box Score vs Keystone: Wenger, Brookens, sophomore Delaney Glazer (Rochester, WA., Rochester), Barker, and Bradley each had two hits to pace the offense. Graduate student Megan Potter (Hagerstown, MD., South Hagerstown) got the win in the circle after pitching 2 innings of relief and allowing 3 runs on 3 hits.

How It Happened Game 1 vs Cedar Crest: Facing the third straight elimination game, the Phoenix jumped on top of the top seeded Falcons in the top of the second inning. A single by Hamilton and a walk by Wenger helped load the bases with no outs. Brookens walked with the bases loaded for an RBI to make it 1-0. Later in the inning, Glazer hit a 2-RBI single to right to push the score to 3-0. In the third, Carty led off with a double and later scored on a single by Kosheba. The Phoenix would add another run on a Falcons error to make the score 5-0. Moving ahead to the fifth inning, Wenger doubled to center field with two outs and scored on an RBI single by Brookens for a 6-0 advantage. Potter was dealing in the circle as she shut down the Falcons offense en route to the shut out victory.

How It Happened Game 2 vs Cedar Crest: The third game of the day for the Phoenix got off to a promising start as Wenger led off with a walk and promptly stole second and third base. Brookens put a ball in play that the pitcher couldn't handle and Wenger came in to score for a 1-0 lead. The Falcons answered in the bottom of the first with an unearned run to tie the game at 1-1. Once again, the Phoenix would take the lead in the third inning. This time Brookens touched home after Glazer singled to center field for a 2-1 advantage. However, the lead would be short lived as the Falcons erupted for seven runs on seven hits to take a commanding 8-2 lead. After a quiet top of the fourth for the Phoenix, the Falcons put the game out of reach in the bottom half of the inning with four more runs on six hits to make it 12-2.
