Phoenix Falter in Championships

La PLUME, Pa. - A fantastic season for the Wilson College baseball team came to a close this afternoon in the Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) Championships. The Phoenix (21-6) fell to the top seeded Keystone College Giants (21-4) by a final score of 12-4 in game 2 of the best-of-three series.

How It Happened: The Phoenix needed to get off to a great start and they did as senior KJ Curry (Bowie, MD., ) led the game off with a walk. Junior Brandon Cook (Glen Burnie, MD., ) followed with a single to center field and both Curry and Cook would come around to score on a single off the bat of sophomore Dean Mercer (Dunedin, FL., Clearwater Central Catholic) for a 2-0 lead. Mercer would later score on a throwing error by the catcher to give the Phoenix a three run first inning. Junior Dereck Ivey (Fairfield, PA., Fairfield) threw well through the first two and two-thirds innings before running into a little trouble in the bottom of the third as the Giants tallied three runs with two outs to tie the game at 3-3. Ivey would settle down and only allow one more run over the next three innings before exiting with one out in the seventh inning. The Phoenix offense continued to battle and had a couple of chances to score as the team had runners in scoring position in the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings but couldn't get anyone home before breaking that cycle in the eighth inning. Trailing 5-3 in the eighth, the Phoenix got a single from junior Juan Rosario (Hollywood, FL., Hollywood Hills), who moved to second on a wild pitch. After graduate student James Husar (Oxford, CT., ) was hit by a pitch, senior Jacob Whittington (Salisbury, MD., ) had an RBI pinch-hit single through the left side to make the score 5-4. However, the Phoenix would leave runners on second and third to end the inning. Things came unraveled for the Phoenix in the bottom of the eighth as 3 hit batters and a pair of wild pitches combined with some timely hits by the Giants saw the hosts push 7 runs across to take a commanding 12-4 lead.

Inside the Box Score: Cook led the offense with a 3-for-4 effort with a runs scored while Mercer tallied a 3-for-5 afternoon with an RBI and a run scored. Husar, Rosario, and Whittington were the only other Phoenix to record a hit. Ivey took the loss on the mound after allowing 5 earned runs in 6 1/3 innings while striking out 6.

Up Next: This concludes the 2021 season for the Phoenix.
