Phoenix Prevail Over Patriots

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - The Wilson College baseball team took on the visiting Patriots of the University of Valley Forge in a Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) matchup to close out their regular season. The Phoenix (19-4, 8-2 CSAC) swept the Patriots (2-13, 1-9 CSAC) by scores of 6-0 and 7-3.

Game One: Senior Joshua Harvey (Perth, Australia, Jefferson Community College (Md.)) got the start on the mound in game one, striking out two in a pedestrian top of the first inning. Both teams battled for the lead throughout the game. That was until Wilson opened up the scoring in the bottom of the fourth inning. Sophomore Dean Mercer (Dunedin, FL., Clearwater Central Catholic) got the scoring started with a base knock to right-center that drove in a run. Shortly after, Mercer scored off a wild pitch that put the Phoenix up 2-0. Later on, still in the fourth, senior Dylan Procopio (Pittsburgh, PA., Westmoreland Community College) drove in two more runs off an RBI to right field. Finally, junior Kevin Finn (Gaithersburg, MD., Watkins Mill) slapped in the last run of the inning on an RBI triple, bringing the score to 5-0. Wilson marched to victory in game one by a final score of 6-0.

Inside the Box Score: Harvey threw for two innings, striking out two batters, while junior Cam Nolet (Annapolis, MD., S.C. Aiken) threw for three and stuck out five on his way to collecting the win. Mercer capped off game one going 2-3 with one run, one RBI, and a stolen base. Procopio went 1-3 with two RBIs and one run while Finn and junior Brandon Cook (Glen Burnie, MD., Shepherd University) both went 1-3 with one triple. For game one, Wilson tallied six runs on six hits with no errors while their opponent finished with zero runs on two hits with one error.

Game Two: Valley Forge managed to score the first run of the game in the top of the first inning. Later on, in the bottom of the second, the Phoenix tied things up off a single down the left-field line from freshman Peyton Mason (Knoxville, MD, Boonsboro HS). In the fourth inning, Wilson took the lead off back-to-back homers from Mason and sophomore Michael Marrale (Sykesville, MD, Old Dominion Univ.) that put the Phoenix out in front, 3-1. After the Patriots scored a run in the top of the fifth, Wilson added two more runs in the bottom half of the inning. Senior KJ Curry (Bowie, MD., Coker University) knocked in the first off and later scored the second run off a wild pitch at home, extending their lead to 5-2. The Phoenix would go on to win the game by a final score of 7-3.

Inside the Box Score: Six different pitchers appeared for Wilson, totaling 13 strikeouts for the game. Curry capped off game two going a perfect 3-3 with two runs, one RBI, two stolen bases, and a walk. Mason went 2-2 with a homer, two runs, one RBI, a walk, and a double while Marrale went 2-2 with a home run, one run, two RBIs, and a walk. For game two, Wilson knocked in seven runs on eight hits with four errors while their opponents added three runs on five hits with four errors.
