Softball Splits with Fighting Squirrels

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - The Wilson College softball team was in action this afternoon as they played host the Fighting Squirrels of Mary Baldwin University in non-conference action. The Phoenix (7-1, 4-0 CSAC) split the series with the Fighting Squirrels (5-15, 1-7 USAS) winning the first game, 10-1, but dropping the second game, 3-1.

Game One: Senior Megan Potter (Hagerstown, MD., South Hagerstown) took to the mound to start for Wilson, holding Mary Baldwin to one run in the top of the first. The Phoenix would not score their first run until the bottom of the second inning. That's when senior Jenna Carty (Chambersburg, PA., Greencastle-Antrim) slapped a two-run RBI single to center field. The next batter up, junior Jessica Kosheba (Marietta, PA., Donegal), drove in another run off an RBI single to left, pushing Wilson in the lead, 3-1.

After a pedestrian top of the third, the Phoenix added five more runs in the bottom half. Senior Meghan Bradley (Warrington, PA., Central Bucks South) drove in the first run off a single to left followed by sophomore Taylor Barker (Chehalis, WA., WF West) who knocked in a run off a fielders choice. A few batters later, Carty drove in another run which set up an RBI single to left field for sophomore Alyssa Wenger (Chambersburg, PA., Chambersburg) who forced in two more runs. After the dust had settled on the inning, the Phoenix led by a score of 8-1. Barker knocked in the last two runs of the game off a huge home run to deep left field, giving Wilson the 10-1 victory after five innings of play.

Inside the Box Score: Potter limited their opponent to just five hits on her way to striking out 12 batters. Carty finished the game hitting a perfect 2-2 with one run and three RBIs while Barker went 1-2 with three RBIs, two runs, and one walk. Altogether, the Phoenix scored ten runs on 12 hits with zero errors while the Fighting Squirrels finished with one run on five hits with one error.

Game Two: In the top of inning number one, Mary Baldwin struck first, scoring one run off three Wilson fielding errors. The Phoenix tied the game up in the bottom half of the inning off a single from Bradley. Moving ahead, to the top of the third, the Fighting Squirrels added one more run. Pushing them in front 2-1.

In the bottom of the fourth, Wilson started to gain some momentum and get some runners on base. The Phoenix offense was looking to make something happen with the bases loaded, but came up short and left the inning with no runs. Mary Baldwin added one more run in the top of the sixth as they went on to take the second game by a final score of 3-1.

Inside the Box Score: Wilson scored one run off two hits with five errors while their opponent score three runs on 12 hits with zero errors. Sophomore Delaney Glazer (Rochester, WA., Rochester) pitched a solid game, striking out five batters. Bradley finished the night going 1-2 with one RBI and one walk while Barker finished going 1-1 with one walk.

Up Next: Softball will host Penn State Altoona (3-0-1, 2-0 AMCC) in another non-conference doubleheader on Thursday, April 8, starting at 3:00 pm.
