Women's Lacrosse Spins Past Cyclones

HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. - The Wilson College women's lacrosse team was in action today as they traveled to take on the Cyclones of Centenary University in Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) play. The Phoenix (1-3, 1-0 CSAC) defeated the Cyclones (0-2. 0-2 CSAC) by a final score of 14-7.

How it Happened: Centenary stuck first, scoring their first goal just over a minute into the game. Shortly after, Wilson was able to knot things up at one apiece with a goal from junior Michaela Singer (Annville, PA., Annville-Cleona). Four minutes later, the Phoenix added another goal, pushing them in front 2-1. Singer found the back of the net for the second time today, assisted by sophomore Paige Reynolds (Keedysville, MD, Boonsboro High School). Almost thirty seconds later, the Cyclones tied things up at two apiece. This Centenary goal would spark a 3-0 run from Wilson. Singer helped spark the run as she scored her third goal of the night, putting the Phoenix ahead 3-2. Shortly after, senior Danielle Stafford (Jessup, MD., Glen Burnie) added the second goal of the run, followed by a goal from freshman Anna Gibson (Cecil County, MD, Perryville HS). After the three-goal run, Wilson took a commanding 5-2 lead. Centenary scored two quick, back-to-back goals that brought them within one point, but Reynolds was able to sneak one by the goalie three minutes before halftime. Giving the Phoenix a 6-4 lead.

In the second half, Singer started things off with another goal, her fourth of the night. Shortly after, Stafford added another goal followed by Reynolds, pushing Wilson in front 9-4. Moments later, after the Cyclones scored another goal, the Phoenix jumped on another 3-0 run. This time the goals came from junior Morgan Burkepile (Millerstown, PA., Greenwood), senior Lauren Rettew (Lancaster, PA, Lampeter Strasburg HS), and one from Gibson off a free position shot. After the run, Wilson was in front by a score of 12-5. After a quick Centenary goal, the Phoenix offense struck again, this time is was freshman Megan Simms (Frederick, MD, Governor Thomas Johnson HS) that scored off an assist from Gibson. Later on in the half, with just under two minutes remaining, Singer was able to cap off her fantastic night with one last goal, giving Wilson the 14-7 victory.

Inside the Box Score: This win marks the first victory for Head Coach Emily Barber and the first win for the program since returning to campus, this season. Before this win, the last lacrosse victory was in April 2012. Singer finished her fantastic night with five goals and one assist while Stafford, Reynolds, and Gibson each finish with two goals apiece. Simms, Rettew, and Burkepile capped off the game with one goal each. Freshman goalkeeper Kyah Peifer (Lancaster, PA, Hempfield HS) finished the game with a total of seven saves.

Up Next: The Wilson College women's lacrosse team will host Notre Dame of Maryland University on Wednesday, April 7, at 4:00 pm.
