CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - The Wilson College softball team was in action this afternoon as they played host to Knights of Southern Virginia University in a doubleheader. The Phoenix (6-0, 4-0 CSAC) defeated the Knights (3-11) by scores of 9-1 in the first game and 5-4 in a game that came down to the last play!
Game One: Senior
Megan Potter (Hagerstown, MD., South Hagerstown) started on the mound for Wilson as she got off to a hot start, striking out the first three batters she faced. In the bottom half of the inning, the offense went right to work, scoring two runs off errors. Skipping ahead to the bottom of the third, freshman
Haiden Brookens (Chambersburg, PA, Chambersburg Magnet ) drove in a run off an RBI single to left field. Shortly after, sophomore
Taylor Barker (Chehalis, WA., WF West) knocked in another run off a fielder's choice, making it 4-0 after three innings. Later on, in the bottom of the sixth, the Phoenix added five more runs as they took game one by a final score of 9-1.
Inside the Box Score: Wilson scored nine runs off eight hits with zero errors while their opponents finished with one run on two hits with three errors. The Wilson College strikeout record continues to grow as
Potter finished the game striking out 11 batters while only giving up two hits.
Brookens capped off her day by hitting a perfect 2-2 with three RBIs, two runs, two walks, and a stolen base while senior
Jenna Carty (Chambersburg, PA., Greencastle-Antrim) went 2-3 with a double and one run.
Barker also had a good game, finishing with one hit and three RBIs.
Game Two: After a scoreless first inning, Southern Virginia struck first with a home run to left field in the top of the second. Later on, in the bottom of the fourth, the Phoenix managed to even the score up off an RBI single from senior
Meghan Bradley (Warrington, PA., Central Bucks South). The Knights, however, would score three more runs to push them in front.
With the score at 4-1 going into the final inning of play, Wilson knew they would have to come up big.
Barker drove in the first run of the inning, off a fielder's choice. Up next was
Bradley, who knocked in three runs off a single to left field, knotting the game up at 4-4. Sophomore
Delaney Glazer (Rochester, WA., Rochester) capped off the game with a walk-off, sacrifice fly to shallow left field that drove in the winning run as the Phoenix took game two, 5-4.
Inside the Box Score: Wilson scored five runs off seven hits with zero errors while Southern Virginia scored four runs off 8 hits with two errors.
Bradley finished the game going 3-4 with three RBIs and a double while
Barker added two runs and one RBI.
Glazer earns her second win of the season.
Up Next: The Phoenix will be back in action on Thursday, April 6, where they will play host to Mary Baldwin University in a doubleheader starting at 3:00 pm.
