Phoenix Stung by Hornets

Winchester, VA - The Wilson College baseball team was in action this afternoon versus 15th ranked Shenandoah University in a non-conference tilt. The Phoenix (17-4) were topped by the Hornets (24-7) by a final score of 6-5.

How It Happened: In the first inning, the Phoenix took advantage of a pair of wild pitches to bring the first run across. Junior Brandon Cook (Glen Burnie, MD., ) reached on a hit by pitch and then stole second base. He would advance to third and home on wild pitches for a 1-0 lead. The Hornets responded with an unearned run in the bottom half of the inning to tie the game at 1-1. After a quiet second inning, the Phoenix bats came alive in the third. Cook doubled to right field and sophomore Dean Mercer (Dunedin, FL., Clearwater Central Catholic) followed with a single to left. Freshman Peyton Mason (Knoxville, MD, Boonsboro HS) crushed a three-run shot to center field to put the visitors up 4-1. Later in the inning sophomore Michael Marrale (Sykesville, MD) drove home junior Gerald Buchanan (Olney, MD ) with a double to right field to extend the lead to 5-1. In the bottom half of the third, the Hornets responded with 4 runs of their own to tie the game at 5-5 with the big blast coming on a three-run homerun. Moving ahead to the eighth inning, the Hornets put runners on 1st and 3rd base with two outs and executed a double steal to bring across the winning run.

Inside the Box Score: Cook, Mercer, and Marrale combined for 6 hits and 2 RBI. Mason tallied a homerun and 3 RBI. The 6 Phoenix pitchers to take the bump allowed 5 earned runs while walking just 1 and striking out 9.
