HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. - The Wilson College baseball team hit the road to take on the Cyclones of Centenary University in a Colonial States Athletic Association (CSAC) doubleheader. The Phoenix (17-3, 6-2 CSAC) swept the Cyclones (7-6, 6-4 CSAC) by scores of 11-0 and 8-3.
Game One- In the bottom of the first, Wilson came up big defensively, turning a double play on a flyout hit to the right fielder, junior
Gerald Buchanan (Olney, MD, Montgomery CC (MD)). In the top of the second,
Buchanan notched the first run of the game with a solo-shot home run. Junior
Cam Nolet (Annapolis, MD., S.C. Aiken) had things working on the mound, retiring the bottom of the inning in order.
In the top of the third, the Phoenix added another run off an RBI single from sophomore
Michael Marrale (Sykesville, MD, Old Dominion Univ.). Later on, in the top of the fourth, Wilson picked up four runs on three hits, extending their lead to 6-0. The Phoenix would go on to win the game by a final score of 11-0.
Inside the Box Score: Buchanan finished game one hitting a perfect 4-4 with three RBIs, one run, a homer, a stolen base, and a walk. In his triumphant return, sophomore
Dean Mercer (Dunedin, FL., Clearwater Central Catholic) went 2-4 with two RBIs and a stolen base. Senior
Procopio (Pittsburgh, PA., Westmoreland Community College) added two hits, two RBIs, one run, and a double while junior
Cook (Glen Burnie, MD., Shepherd University) went 2-4 with two runs, a sacrifice fly, and three stolen bases.
Nolet (Annapolis, MD., S.C. Aiken) threw for eight, striking out seven and only letting up one hit on his way to his fifth win of the season. Altogether, Wilson tallied 11 runs on 17 hits and one error while giving up zero runs and just one hit.
Game Two: The Phoenix wasted no time getting the bats going in the second game, scoring four runs in the first inning off four hits. In the bottom of the second, the Cyclones earned one run back followed by another run in the bottom of the third, cutting their deficit to just two runs, 4-2. Later on, in the fourth inning, Centenary cut the lead to 4-3.
Skipping ahead to the top of the seventh, the Wilson offense got the bats going again.
Buchanan started the scoring with an RBI double to left field. A few batters later, junior
Juan Rosario (Hollywood, FL., Hollywood Hills) knocked another run with a single to left. Later on in the inning, the Phoenix added two runs off a fielding error, as they would go on to take game two by a final of 8-3.
Inside the Box Score: Mercer finished the game going a perfect 4-4 with one run, stolen base, and one walk.
Cook added three hits, one run, one RBI, one double, and a stolen base,
Rosario added two hits, one run, one RBI, and
Buchanan added one hit, two RBIs, and a double. Junior
Kevin Ehrman (York, PA., Central York) started on the mound for Wilson, throwing 3.1 innings and striking out two while
Dereck Ivey (Fairfield, PA., Fairfield) gets credit with the win, throwing for 5.2 innings and striking out seven. The Phoenix tallied eight runs on 16 hits and one error while holding their opponent to three runs on seven hits with four errors. Wilson wraps up the series with an astounding 33 hits.
