Phoenix Win In Overtime To Advance to CSAC Finals

Shippensburg, PA - The Wilson College women's lacrosse team hosted Keystone College in a Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) Championships semi-final contest this afternoon on the campus of Shippensburg University. The #2-seeded Phoenix (4-4) defeated the #3-seeded Giants (2-3) in overtime by a final score of 7-6. The Phoenix advance to the CSAC Championship match this Saturday hosted by the top-seeded Gators of Notre Dame of Maryland University.

How It Happened: The Phoenix jumped out to an early 2-0 lead with a pair of goals in the first four minutes of the match. Sophomore Paige Reynolds (Keedysville, MD, Boonsboro High School) struck first with a free position goal just over two minutes into the opening half. A little over a minute later, freshman All-CSAC honoree Anna Gibson (Cecil County, MD, Perryville HS) ripped a shot past the Giants goalie for a 2-0 Phoenix advantage. A goal by the Giants near the twenty-minute mark pulled the visitors within one point. During the next ten minutes, the Giants took two shots on goal, the last of which was a free position attempt, but freshman goalie Kyah Peifer (Lancaster, PA, Hempfield HS) came up with a huge save to preserve the Phoenix lead. After the the save by Peifer, the Phoenix moved quickly to the other end of the field and senior All-CSAC honoree Michaela Singer (Annville, PA., Annville-Cleona) scored the first of her 3 goals on the afternoon to push the lead to 3-1. Later in the half, the Giants again pulled within one with a goal to make it 3-2, however with three minutes left in the half, freshman Megan Simms (Frederick, MD, Governor Thomas Johnson HS) hit on a free position attempt as the Phoenix took a 4-2 lead into the break. In the second half, the Giants connected on two goals in the first ten minutes of action to tie the match at 4-4. Two quick responses followed for the Phoenix as Simms found Singer for her second goal and five minutes later, Singer finished off her hat-trick with a solo shot to make it 6-4. A goal by the Giants pulled them within one with seven minutes remaining. The Phoenix took possession with 30 seconds left in regulation, but a turnover in their own end gave the Giants life and with twelve seconds remaining, the Giants scored on a free position goal to send the match to overtime tied at 6-6. Midway through the overtime period, the Phoenix earned a free position attempt and Simms connected for the game winner sending the Phoenix to the championship game by a final score of 7-6.
