Softball Spins Past Cyclones

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - The Wilson College softball team took on the Cyclones of Centenary University earlier this afternoon in a Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) doubleheader. The Phoenix (14-2, 9-1 CSAC) swept the Cyclones (6-8, 6-6 CSAC) by a score of 7-2 in the first one and 5-4 in the second. 

Game One: Senior Megan Potter (Hagerstown, MD., South Hagerstown) got the start in the circle for Wilson as she retired the top of the first in order. Later on, in the bottom of the second inning, the Phoenix scored two runs off an RBI double from sophomore Alecia Hamilton (Canton, OH., Glenoak). Centenary managed to tie things up at 2-2 in the top of the fourth. But, in the bottom half of the inning, the Phoenix added two more runs. The first run was scored off an RBI double from senior Jenna Carty (Chambersburg, PA., Greencastle-Antrim) while the other run was scored off an RBI double from junior Jessica Kosheba (Marietta, PA., Donegal). Wilson would go on to win the first game by a final score of 7-2.

Inside the Box Score: The Phoenix scored seven runs on nine hits with five errors while their opponents finished with two runs on six hits with two errors. Carty led the charge offensively, hitting 2-3 with two runs, two RBIs, and a double. Hamilton went 2-3 with a double and sophomore Makenna Snodgrass (Flagstaff, AZ., Flagstaff) went 1-1 with two RBIs and a double. Potter pitched a complete game striking out seven while only surrendering one earned run, earning her seventh win of the season.

Game Two: After a quiet first inning, the Cyclones struck first in game two, scoring two runs in the top of the second. Later on, in the top of the third, Centenary added another run, putting them in front 3-0. In the top of the fourth, Wilson tied the game after scoring three runs. Sophomore Delaney Glazer (Rochester, WA., Rochester) added the first run on a sacrifice fly while the other two runs came off a single from sophomore Taylor Barker (Chehalis, WA., WF West). Moving ahead to the bottom of the sixth inning, the Phoenix took the lead as Barker slapped a single to left that scored a run, putting the Phoenix on top 4-3. The Cyclones would not go away, as they tied the game up at four apiece after scoring a run in the top of the seventh. Freshman Haiden Brookens (Chambersburg, PA, Chambersburg Magnet ) ended it in the bottom half of the inning, as Wilson took game two by a final score of 5-4. 

Inside the Box Score: Glazer finished hitting a perfect 2-2 with two runs and a double while Barker finished hitting 2-3 with 3 RBIs. Potter picks up her eighth win of the season while Glazer threw for six innings. The Phoenix scored five runs on 10 hits with two errors while their opponent finished with four runs on 10 hits with one error. 

Up Next: The softball team will travel to take on Keystone College in a CSAC doubleheader on Thursday, April 22, starting at 3:00 pm.
