Potter Tosses No-Hitter as Softball Sweeps Ravens

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa - The Wilson College softball team played host to Rosemont College this afternoon in a Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) match-up. The Phoenix (12-2, 7-1) got a no-hitter from senior pitcher Megan Potter (Hagerstown, MD., South Hagerstown) in game 1 of the doubleheader sweep over the Ravens (4-6, 4-6).

How It Happened Game 1: The Phoenix offense was hot from the beginning as the team erupted for 8 runs in the bottom of the first inning. Sophomore Alyssa Wenger (Chambersburg, PA., Chambersburg) led of with a triple to right field. Freshman Haiden Brookens (Chambersburg, PA, Chambersburg Magnet ) and senior Katey Roth (Lebanon, PA., Lebanon) each followed with a walk which led to a pitching change in the circle. After an out, senior Meghan Bradley (Warrington, PA., Central Bucks South) stroked a double to right center to score Wenger and Brookens. Later in the inning an RBI single by senior Jenna Carty (Chambersburg, PA., Greencastle-Antrim) extended the lead to 4-0. A few batters later saw Wenger hit her second triple of the inning, this time driving in two runs for a 7-0 advantage. Brookens closed out the scoring in the inning with an RBI single to left field. In the second, the Phoenix would tack on 5 more runs with the two big blows coming from an RBI double by Bradley and a 2-RBI double by junior Jessica Kosheba (Marietta, PA., Donegal). Wenger tallied her third hit of the game, an RBI single, to make the score 13-0. The story of the game was Potter who, minus a lead-off walk in the third inning, was perfect in the circle and faced only one batter over the minimum in the 18-0 victory.

Inside the Box Score: Wenger led the Phoenix offense going 4-for-5 with 3 triples, 3 runs scored, and 3 RBI. Bradley was 2-for-2 at the plate with 2 doubles, 3 runs scored, and 3 RBI. Kosheba added a 2-for-3 performance with 2 doubles, 3 runs scored, and a game high 4 RBI. Potter improved to 6-0 on the season as she went the distance in the circle walking 1 and striking out 7.

How It Happened Game 2: While game 2 didn't start out quite the same for the Phoenix, the offense still put on a solid performance. In the second inning, sophomore Taylor Barker (Chehalis, WA., WF West) got things started with a two out single. Carty followed with a double to left field to score Barker. Sophomore Alecia Hamilton (Canton, OH., Glenoak) followed with an RBI single to score Carty for a 2-0 lead.  The Raven responded in the top of the third as they recorded their first run of the day on a single and a double to pull within 2-1. However, in the bottom half of the third the Phoenix bats came alive for 5 more runs. Roth led off with a single and stole second base. Sophomore Delaney Glazer (Rochester, WA., Rochester) followed with a single and then Roth and Glazer pulled off a double steal to make it 3-1 in favor of the hosts. Bradley followed with an RBI double and scored on a triple by Barker. Carty stepped to the plate and blasted a 2-run homerun over the right center-field fence to extend the advantage to 7-1. Neither team could get much going for the next few innings. In the sixth, the Ravens mounted a small rally scoring 3 runs but could never get any closer as the Phoenix went on for the 9-4 win.

Inside the Box Score: The Phoenix had 6 extra-base hits in the second game with 5 doubles and a homerun. Roth, Glazer, Barker, Carty, and Kosheba each had two hits while Roth also added 3 stolen bases. Bradley has recorded at least 1 hit in each game this season and is riding a 14 game hitting streak. Sophomore Makenna Snodgrass (Flagstaff, AZ., Flagstaff) improved to 3-0 on the season after allowing 3 earned runs while striking out 2 in 6 innings of work.
