Softball Splits with Falcons

ALLENTOWN, Pa. - The Wilson College softball team took on the Falcons of Cedar Crest College earlier today in a Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) doubleheader. The Phoenix (10-2, 5-1 CSAC) split the series with the Falcons (6-2, 6-2 CSAC), taking the first game, 10-7, but dropping the second game, 10-8. 

Game One: Senior Katey Roth (Lebanon, PA., Lebanon) knocked in the first run of the game off an RBI bunt. In the bottom of the second, Cedar Crest managed to hit a two-run homer that put them in front, 2-1. Wilson was able to even the game up in the bottom of the third with a single to center field from sophomore Delaney Glazer (Rochester, WA., Rochester). Later on, in the top of the fourth, the Phoenix knocked in three runs on four hits, pushing them out in front by a score of 6-2. After the Falcons scored a run in the bottom of the fourth, Wilson then scored four runs in the top of the seventh to extend their lead to 10-3. Sophomore Alyssa Wenger (Chambersburg, PA., Chambersburg) notched the first three runs off an RBI double followed by freshman Haiden Brookens (Chambersburg, PA, Chambersburg Magnet ) who scored a run off a single down the left-field line. The Phoenix detered the late rally from Cedar Crest as they would go on to take game one, 10-7. 

Inside the Box Score: Wilson scored 10 runs on 14 hits with no errors while the Falcons scored seven runs on 12 hits with four errors. Senior Megan Potter (Hagerstown, MD., South Hagerstown) stuck out eight on her way to earning her fifth victory of the season. Roth went a perfect 5-5 with one RBI and two stolen based while Wenger went 3-4 with four runs, three RBIs, two stolen bases, and a walk. 

Game Two: Roth got the game started with a delayed steal that caused a throwing error and resulted in a run for the Phoenix. The next batter up, sophomore Taylor Barker (Chehalis, WA., WF West), drove Roth in on an RBI single to left. In the bottom of the first, Cedar Crest scored six runs, putting them in front, 6-2. Wilson started to chip away in the top of the second, scoring two runs. Senior Jenna Carty (Chambersburg, PA., Greencastle-Antrim) got the scoring started with a solo shot followed by Brookens who drove in a run off a fielder's choice. The Falcons managed to extend their lead to 7-4 in the bottom half of the inning and then 9-4 in the bottom of the third. The Phoenix continued to chip away but could not come back as they dropped game two by a score of 10-8.

Inside the Box Score: Roth finished game two hitting 4-5 with two runs, one RBI, and two stolen bases. Wenger and Glazer both went 2-3 while Barker hit 2-5. Wilson scored eight runs on 14 hits with five errors while their opponents finished with 10 runs on 12 hits with three errors. 

Up Next: The Phoenix will take on Penn State Harrisburg on Monday, April 12, in a doubleheader starting at 3:00 pm.
