Potter Records 500th K As Softball Sweeps Eagles

MORRISTOWN, N.J.- The Wilson College softball team got two outstanding pitching performances in the circle en route to a Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) sweep of Saint Elizabeth University. In game 1, senior Megan Potter (Hagerstown, MD., South Hagerstown) notched the 500th strikeout of her career as the Phoenix (2-0, 2-0 CSAC) won 7-0 over the Eagles (0-2, 0-2 CSAC). Game 2 saw sophomore Makenna Snodgrass (Flagstaff, AZ., Flagstaff) go the distance and pitch a shutout in the 16-0 victory.

How It Happened Game 1: Pitching was the story for both teams as neither team recorded a hit until the Eagles tallied a single in the fourth inning. The Phoenix bats woke up the fifth inning as sophomore Delaney Glazer (Rochester, WA., Rochester) started things off with a single. Senior Meghan Bradley (Warrington, PA., Central Bucks South) and junior Jessica Kosheba (Marietta, PA., Donegal) followed with a singles of their own to load the bases. Sophomore pinch runner Alecia Hamilton (Canton, OH., Glenoak) would come home to score on a ball off the bat of freshman Naomi Butterfield (Nampa, ID, Timberline High School) to plate the first run of the game. Kosheba would then score on a bunt by senior Katey Roth (Lebanon, PA., Lebanon). In the sixth, the Phoenix would add another run. Glazer would score on an RBI single by Bradley to push the lead to 3-0. In the seventh, the Phoenix would put 4 more runs on the board without the benefit of a hit. Potter closed the door on the Eagles in the bottom half of the seventh as she struck out the final three batters.

Inside the Box Score: Potter recorded her 500th career strikeout in the third inning on the way to a 14 strikeout performance with 0 runs allowed. Glazer and Bradley each went 2-for 3 at the plate with an RBI.

How It Happened Game 2: The Phoenix jumped out to an early lead and never looked back in the nightcap. A 5-run first inning was highlighted by a 3-run homerun off the bat of sophomore Taylor Barker (Chehalis, WA., WF West). In the second inning, the visitors took advantage of some poor fielding by the Eagles to push across 2 unearned runs. The Phoenix erupted for 8 runs in the third inning as the team sent 11 batters to the plate. The final four runs of the inning came off the bat of Barker as she crushed the ball over the left field fence for a grand slam, her second home run of the game. Snodgrass controlled the game from the circle as she scattered six hits and struck out 3 without allowing a walk in the 16-0 win.

Inside the Box Score: Barker led the Phoenix at the dish with a 2-for-3 performance that included 2 home runs, 2 runs scored and 7 RBI. Bradley went 2-for-3 with 2 runs scored and 3 RBI while sophomore Alyssa Wenger (Chambersburg, PA., Chambersburg) had a team high 3 hits as she was 3-for-4 at the plate with 2 runs scored.

Up Next: Wilson will travel to Valley Forge on Wednesday for a CSAC tilt.
